Orbis to assist over 60,000 Mekong Delta children with eye care next year
Orbis international organisation will support more than 60,000 children in the Mekong Delta region with eye check-ups and assist over 10,000 students with surgeries under a project slated for next year. Authorities of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on May 19 received representatives of the organisation regarding the integration of an eye screening project into annual health examination for children in 2023. Legislators in Soc Trang Province passed a resolution on Friday to allocate VND1 trillion of the provincial budget to clear a site for Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang Expressway. Soc Trang Chairman Tran Van Lau said the fund is a "significant challenge" but for the general development of Mekong Delta, the province promises to fulfill the commitment. On the same day, An Giang legislators agreed on spending VND1.38 trillion of the provincial budget to clear a site for the expressway’s section in the province. Hau Giang authorities on Thursday decided to use VND823 billion for site clearance while the Can Tho City administration said its legislative unit will hold a meeting later this month to pass a resolution on extracting VND1.1 trillion of the city’s budget to clear a site for the expressway here. During an online meeting with voters in Can Tho, Chinh said the largest economic center in Mekong Delta is an important hub for intra-regional and international transportation; therefore, it is necessary to build a railway connecting it with the southern metropolis and the country's southernmost province Ca Mau. Can Tho needs to develop infrastructure, especially traffic and complete regional and inter-regional connectivity projects to promote the central role and driving force of regional development, the PM stressed. Center to be set up for Mekong Delta agriculture development
The Mekong Delta Agricultural Product Center would act as a hub connecting farmers, producers and traders, Duong Tan Hien, deputy chairman of Can Tho, said at a conference held Thursday to collect opinions on it. The "one-stop, multi-service" center would cover the production and processing of agriculture products, provide a warehouse system and set up the non-tariff area for the region, he said. It would also be a place for applying advanced technologies in agriculture, with projects to produce organic microbial fertilizers, nano fertilizers, organic plant protection products, and pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and high-value products from agricultural products, he said. Farmers reduce rice paddy fields over surging production costs in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta
Farmers in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta have been reducing the scale of their rice farming operations due to the rising cost of fertilizers, plant protection products, and labor. Input costs for rice farming, namely fertilizers, agricultural materials, seeds, and labor, have surged since the beginning of this year, resulting in losses for farmers, according to Nguyen Trung Phuong, a resident in Vinh Long Province. Fertilizers now sell at VND1-1.5 million (US$43-64) per bag, Phuong added. To minimize his losses, Phuong and his family have scaled down the size of their rice paddy farm. Aside from fresh water resources and weather conditions, operating cost have emerged as a serious concern for local farmers, according to Au Trong Huu, an agricultural official in Tan An Luong Commune in Vinh Long. Construction businesses in Dong Thap and An Giang Provinces in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region are facing a severe shortage of sand supply, which has seriously affected progress of their works. In recent times, numerous barges have been gathering on the Tien River between the two provinces, waiting for taking sand delivery, as many sand mines with limited reserves have reduced mining output while some expired mining licenses have yet to be renewed, as recorded by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s reporters. Currently, sand mining activities in Tien and Hau Rivers take place continuously, but supply is still below demand.
