Short story by Brazil’s most renowned writer found in Rio
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A short story written by Brazil's most renowned writer Machado de Assis was found in Rio after being presumed lost for over a hundred years, local daily O Globo reported Friday. Researcher Mauro Rosso found the short story, titled Um para o outro (One to the other), among old documents in the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation, an institution dedicated to the preservation of Brazil's literary production. The recovered story will be published in Rosso's book on Machado de Assis and also in a new edition of the author's complete works. Brazil has celebrated this year the 100th anniversary of Machado's death. First published in 1879, Um para o outro depicts the relationship between a brother and sister. In 1965, only three of its chapters were published in a book about Machado, as the other seven were believed to have been lost. Short stories look at Delta
A recent collection of short stories entitled Buffet Truyen Ngan Dong Bang (Short Stories from Mekong Delta) has received a warm reception from readers for its truthful depiction of southern people. Launched by Tre (Youth) Publishing Company last week, the collection features 20 short stories by emerging and established Mekong Delta writers including Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Vu Hong and Vo Dieu Thanh. The stories portray the Mekong Delta’s people as hard-working and outspoken. Several stories describe the challenges and struggles that ordinary southern people face. "I was deeply moved when I read the story Nhung Manh Doi Troi Dat (Hard Life of Drifters) by Tran Thoi in the collection," one reader Nguyen Van Khai said. Poor farmers in the short story earn their living from raising free-range ducks, a traditional job unique in the Delta.
