Laos boosts electricity exports to Vietnam, Cambodia
Illustrative image (Photo: AP) Vientiane (VNA) – The Lao government is focusing on implementing an array of hydropower projects nationwide to increase its electricity exports to regional countries, including Vietnam and Cambodia. Laos has signed contracts with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) covering 25 projects with a combined capacity of 2,180 MW, of which Sekaman 1, Sekamansanse and Sekaman 3 already have a total capacity of 572 MW. With an accumulative capacity of 1,608 MW, the remainders are scheduled to be put into operation and supply electricity for Vietnam from 2022-2025. The two countries have also reached memoranda of understanding on other projects, helping to push total electricity output expected to be exported from Laos to Vietnam to 8,148 MW by 2030. Defense minister holds bilateral meeting with counterparts from Laos, Japan and Cambodia
At the meeting with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Chansamone Chanyalath, General Giang was informed by the Lao counterpart on his country’s COVID-19 prevention and control efforts. The Lao Deputy PM and Defense Minister also thanked the Vietnamese government and defense ministry for supporting the Lao government and people in difficult periods. Bus route connecting Thailand-Laos-Vietnam in discussion

The website said the Thai government has approved expediting negotiations to open a bus route connecting three countries via route R12 from Nakhon Phanom, Thailand to Thakhek, Laos and on to Ha Tinh, Vietnam. The distance from Nakhon Phanom to Ha Tinh is about 300km. The Thai Ministry of Transport says it is doing what it can to expedite the route-opening process, including asking that Laos host the second Trilateral Working Group Meeting as soon as possible in order to discuss the service model and make formal agreements. Vietnam arrests Lao nationals for drug trafficking
The first arrest, of 19-year-old Laotian Xi Bun, took place around 10 p.m. Sunday at the border of the province and Laos in a joint operation by border guards and police. After interrogating Xi Bun, police arrested two others on Monday: a Vietnamese man named Ho Ven, 36, and a Lao man named A Roong Chu, 25. Colonel Bui Duc Trung, head of the central region's task force on drug and crime prevention and control, said Tuesday that the case belonged to a major cross-border drug smuggling and transportation ring involving a "huge" amount of drugs, Vietnam News Agency reported. Vietnam has been identified by security agencies as a key trafficking hub for narcotics despite having some of the world's toughest drug laws. Those convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of meth face the death penalty. Lao Cai hosts 8th international yoga day
The performance lasted for 30 minutes in light rain and fog, attracting a huge crowd of tourists. Da Nang enhances friendship, cooperation with Lao localities
