German journalist’s charity visit to central Vietnam Journalist Lothar A. Baltrusch has travelled 15,000 km by his motorbike from Germany to Vietnam to see a poor girl in the central province of Quang Tri. The German journalist arrived in Vietnam on July 9 after he left Schwerte city, Germany, on May 17 and went through many countries, including Poland, Latvia, Russia, Mongolia, China and Laos. His first destination in Vietnam is Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province, where he is going to provide financial support for Pham Thi Thao Huyen, a poor girl introduced to him by the World Vision – a non-profit organization. Lothar is prepared to see a 13-year-old girl named Huyen and her family whom he has financially supported since September 2009. To him, money is not enough and he likes to meet the girl personally. ‘Turbulence: A Survival Story’ author arrives in Vietnam
‘Turbulence: A Survival Story’ author arrives in Vietnam Annette Herfkens, the author of the memoirs “Turbulence: A Survival Story” and the sole survivor of a plane crash in Vietnam’s central coast province of Khanh Hoa 22 years ago, has started her week-long trip to the country. This is her second visit to Vietnam since the air crash and this time she comes with her daughter and son. Her first trip back to the crash site on O Kha Mountain in Son Trung Commune, Khanh Son District, Khanh Hoa Province took place in 2006. The Dutch-born author will meet local media, have an exchange with readers and tour O Kha Mountain which the Yak-40 jetliner of Vietnam Airlines Flight 474 crashed into in 1992 in a tropical storm, killing 30 passengers, including her fiancé, and crew members. Nguyen Thanh Van, a folk artist in HCMC, recognizes himself a guardian of the game of kite flying. Pursuing the passion for the traditional kite since he was young, Van has devoted a lot of time and effort to it. He has turned out around 200 kite models featuring such animals as turtle, fish, bird, dragon, phoenix and eagle; flowers; and even flute kite to satisfy his hobby and compete. The artist also participated in many local and international kite festivals with his team called the Phoenix Kite Club.
