Russia to launch Iranian satellite amid Ukraine war concerns
Iran's "Khayyam" satellite is scheduled to take off from the Moscow-operated Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 0552 GMT, three weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin met Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. Iran has sought to deflect suspicions that Moscow could use Khayyam to improve its surveillance of military targets in Ukraine. Last week, U.S. daily The Washington Post quoted anonymous Western intelligence officials as saying that Russia "plans to use the satellite for several months or longer" to assist its war efforts before allowing Iran to take control. But the Iranian Space Agency said on Sunday that the Islamic republic would control the Khayyam satellite "from day one." "No third country is able to access the information" sent by the satellite due to its "encrypted algorithm," it said. The purpose of Khayyam is to "monitor the country's borders", enhance agricultural productivity and monitor water … [Read more...] about Russia to launch Iranian satellite amid Ukraine war concerns
US returns to Cambodia 30 antiquities looted from historic sites
The Southeast Asian country's archaeological sites -including Koh Ker, a capital of the ancient Khmer empire - suffered widespread looting in civil conflicts between the 1960s and 1990s. Cambodia's government has since sought to repatriate stolen antiquities sold on the international market. Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, said the items being returned were sold to Western buyers by Douglas Latchford, a Bangkok dealer who created fake documents to conceal that the items had been looted and smuggled. Williams said the antiquities, including a 10th century sandstone statue depicting the Hindu god of war Skanda riding on a peacock, were voluntarily relinquished by U.S. museums and private collectors after his office filed civil forfeiture claims. "These statues and artifacts ... are of extraordinary cultural value to the Cambodian people," Williams said at a ceremony in Manhattan announcing the return of the antiquities. U.S. prosecutors in 2019 charged … [Read more...] about US returns to Cambodia 30 antiquities looted from historic sites
Vietnam tennis ace jumps to career-high world ranking
His previous career-high ranking was 358, achieved mid-July this year. Vietnam’s best tennis player was in impressive form with a streak of 24 consecutive wins in the past two months before losing to Japan’s Yuta Shimizu in the final of the M15 Kuching, also in Malaysia, last weekend. Nam’s ranking could get higher next week after his M15 Kuching result is factored in. This moves Nam closer to the goal that he’d set earlier this year of getting into the top 300. From now until the end of the year, he can accumulate more points from many tournaments held in Vietnam. Next, Nam will join the Vietnam national tennis team for the 2022 Davis Cup Group III Asia-Pacific tournament, which will take place in Tay Ninh, southern Vietnam, from August 10 to 13. … [Read more...] about Vietnam tennis ace jumps to career-high world ranking
