The online world in Vietnam has been discussing the strange shape of the GPS vest that striker Nguyen Tien Linh wore beneath his jersey during the men’s football semifinal against Malaysia on Thursday night. Vietnam U23s defeated their Malaysian counterparts 1-0 in extra time in Thursday’s Southeast Asian Games semifinal thanks to the only goal scored by Tien Linh in the 111th minute. The moment the striker took his jersey off to celebrate the goal in an exploding atmosphere, many football supporters across Vietnam, though overwhelmed with joy, noticed that the player was wearing an under-shirt vest that, to some, resembles a sports bra. The vest, which is strange to many people, then started a widespread online discussion, where curious netizens questioned what the item exactly is. For people who are football fans, they might already have the answer. The vest that footballers wear under their jerseys, and sometimes over them during training, is a piece of equipment … [Read more...] about Vietnamese striker’s bra-like vest during SEA Games semifinal grabs online attention

Elon Musk is wrong about zero restraint free speech
Last month, a short news piece became a topic of discussion for my class. The lesson was about the power of news and information, about how fake news is detected and analyzed. It turns out that my students, all young people, are feeling the brunt of the sheer amount of information they are bombarded with. Information about the Covid-19 pandemic, for instance, is an endless sea. A recent study by Oxford University revealed that around 76 percent of young people are exposed to fake news from online sources at least once a week, an increase of 50 percent from two years ago. "A lie can travel around the world and back again while the truth is lacing up its boots" said Mark Twain. I think that quote is apt for our times. In the past, large platforms like Facebook played it safe; they only called themselves technological platforms that aggregate information to connect users, not media companies. That's how they avoided the troubles associated with being a publisher. The tech world … [Read more...] about Elon Musk is wrong about zero restraint free speech
Young Vietnamese turn to mortgages, installment plans to secure dream homes
Le Thi Bao Tran, a young white-collar worker in Ho Chi Minh City, has spent the past eight years moving between rented rooms, doing her best to save up enough money to purchase a home of her own. Like other young, white-collar workers who have moved to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue their careers, Tran hopes to eventually purchase a home in the city, but the rising cost of real estate has kept that dream out of reach. A lifelong dream Tran spent her college years moving between rental apartments in Binh Thanh District. At one point, she shared a tiny 10-square-meter apartment with a friend for just VND1.1 million ($47) per month, including utilities. During the dry season, the apartment would heat up like an oven, and the putrid smell from a nearby garbage dump would waft through the windows. "If you closed the door, you could hardly breathe. If you opened the door, you still couldn’t breathe because of the horrible smell," she shared. Things were not much better in the … [Read more...] about Young Vietnamese turn to mortgages, installment plans to secure dream homes
Vietnamese man collects over a thousand reel to reel tape recorders in two decades
A man in Ho Chi Minh City has spent nearly 16 years collecting reel to reel tape recorders. Pham Quy Long, aka Tuan Akai, now owns a collection of reel to reel tape recorders and turntables worth nearly VND2 billion (U$86,600). Tuan Akai developed his interest in collecting the items after he saw a reel to reel tape recorder at a coffee shop. After asking the café’s owner to buy the recorder several times and being turned down, Tuan Akai insisted on convincing the owner to sell by visiting the venue constantly for three months until the owner finally agreed to sell it for VND6 million. (US$1 = VND 23,037) “I started collecting in 2006, and now have over a thousand devices,” Tuan Akai told Tuoi Tre News . “The emergence of social media has also made it easier for me to collect them. “My recorders were produced by many manufacturers including Akai, Teac, Pioneer, Sony, Studer, Revox and more, but mostly Akai. “That’s also why I got the nickname Tuan Akai.” … [Read more...] about Vietnamese man collects over a thousand reel to reel tape recorders in two decades

Contractors in Mekong Delta provinces struggling with sand shortage
Construction businesses in Dong Thap and An Giang Provinces in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region are facing a severe shortage of sand supply, which has seriously affected progress of their works. In recent times, numerous barges have been gathering on the Tien River between the two provinces, waiting for taking sand delivery, as many sand mines with limited reserves have reduced mining output while some expired mining licenses have yet to be renewed, as recorded by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s reporters. Currently, sand mining activities in Tien and Hau Rivers take place continuously, but supply is still below demand. The most prominent scene of the sand thirst has been seen in the section of the Tien River spanning An Giang Province’s Tan Cau Town and Dong Thap Province’s Hong Ngu District, where hundreds of barges docked everywhere to wait for receiving sand from sand mining firms. On the Hau River, in the section that connects Chau Phu and Phu Tan Districts of An Giang … [Read more...] about Contractors in Mekong Delta provinces struggling with sand shortage

Vietnam will remove the pre-entry COVID-19 test requirements for all foreign arrivals starting Sunday, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has directed. The direction, effective at 0:00 on May 15, comes as the numbers of COVID-19 infections and deaths drop both in Vietnam and around the world. In such context, many countries have been taking steps to ease COVID-19 restrictions, including removal of pre-entry testing, the document said.
