Addressing the second day of a two-day meeting, Biden said "a great deal of history of our world in the next 50 years is going to be written in the ASEAN countries, and our relationship with you is the future, in the coming years and decades." The summit marks the first time that ASEAN leaders gathered as a group in Washington and their first meeting hosted by a U.S. president since 2016. The Biden administration hopes the effort will show that Washington remains focused on the Indo-Pacific and the long-term challenge of China, which it views as its main competitor, despite the crisis in Ukraine. "We're launching a new era - a new era - in U.S.-ASEAN relations," Biden said. Earlier, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris told ASEAN leaders the United States would remain in the region for generations and stressed the need to maintain freedom of the seas, which Washington says is challenged by China. "The United States and ASEAN have shared a vision for this region, and together we … [Read more...] about US-ASEAN summit marks ‘new era’ for ties: Biden

Gunman kills 10 in live-streamed racial attack on New York state supermarket
An 18-year-old white gunman shot 10 people to death and wounded three on Saturday at a grocery store in a Black neighborhood of upstate New York, before surrendering after what authorities called an act of "racially motivated violent extremism." Authorities said the suspect, who was armed with an assault-style rifle and appeared to have acted alone, drove to Buffalo from his home several hours away to launch the afternoon attack that he broadcast in real time on social media platform Twitch, a live video service owned by Amazon.com. Eleven of the 13 people struck by gunfire were Black, officials said. The two others were white. The racial breakdown of the dead was not made clear. Court papers named the suspect as Payton Gendron of Conklin, a town of about 5,000 people in New York's Southern Tier region near the Pennsylvania border. He was arraigned hours after the shooting in state court on first-degree murder charges, which carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without … [Read more...] about Gunman kills 10 in live-streamed racial attack on New York state supermarket

Biden says 13 countries to join new Asia-Pacific trade framework
"The United States and Japan, together with 11 other nations will be launching" the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, or IPEF, Biden said at a press conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. "This framework is a commitment to working with our close friends and partners in the region on challenges that matter most to ensuring economic competitiveness in the 21st century," he said. Biden was due to make a formal rollout of the framework later Monday. He did not say what countries had already signed up to IPEF, which the White House is billing as a framework for what will ultimately become a tight-knit group of trading nations. Unlike traditional trade blocs, there is no plan for IPEF members to negotiate tariffs and ease market access -- a tool that has become increasingly unpalatable to U.S. voters fearful of undermining homegrown manufacturing. Instead, the program foresees integrating partners through agreed standards in four main areas: the … [Read more...] about Biden says 13 countries to join new Asia-Pacific trade framework

As Vietnam reopens its borders to tourism, attracting, developing and retaining a quality workforce has become the top priority for this industry. With borders reopened and tourism promotion campaigns launched in Vietnam, hotels, tour operators and ancillary service providers across the country might be facing a major problem: shortage of qualified labor. Dr Nuno F. Ribeiro, RMIT University Vietnam During the worst period of the pandemic in 2020-2021, many tourism organizations had to reduce their (experienced) workforce. A report by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism revealed that tourism businesses cut staff by 70-80% in 2020. In 2021, the number of full-time tourism employees was down to 25% of the 2020 level, and about 30% quit their jobs or had their contracts terminated.
