Vietnamese, Lao experts share experience in hydropower plant operation

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Officials from the Department of Energy Safety Management (DESM) under the Lao Ministry of Energy and Mines made a working visit to Vietnam’s Son La hydroelectric power plant on August 3 and 4 to study the plant’s operation. The Son La hydroelectric power plant is the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia, with six turbines having a combined capacity of 2,400 MW. The plant generates over 10 billion kWh of electricity a year. The operation of the plant has ensured absolute safety since it was commissioned nearly 10 years ago. Besides electricity generation, the plant plays an important role in preventing floods in the rainy season and supplying water in the dry season for the Red River Delta , while creating an impetus for socio-economic development in the northwestern region. Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia convene sixth court conference
In his opening speech, Lao Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune said the event did not only enable participants to share lessons in fighting trans-national crimes and judicial assistance but also helped Laos carry out two national agendas on dealing with economic-financial difficulties and drug issues. Chief Justice of the Vietnam Supreme People’s Court Nguyen Hoa Binh urged judicial agencies of the three countries to further strengthen cooperation as the fight against crimes and the settlement of civil disputes across the border remain complicated. More trains to be added on Hanoi – Lao Cai rail route

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi Railway Transport JSC (Haraco) has said that it will run extra passenger trains on the Hanoi – Lao Cai route, starting from September, to meet the rising travel demand to the resort town of Sa Pa. There are currently only passenger trains running at weekends. From September 5, services from Hanoi to Lao Cai will be available on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Trains will depart from Hanoi Railway Station at 10pm and arrive at Lao Cai Railway Station at 5:55am. From Lao Cai to Hanoi, services will be available on Wednesdays and Sundays, starting from September 7. Trains will leave Lao Cai at 9:30pm and drop off passengers at Hanoi Station at 5:25am. Plastic waste monitoring helps protect aquatic ecosystems in Cu Lao Cham

The move is hoped to contribute to conserving biodiversity, creating sustainable livelihoods for locals. According to the communication and community development section under the management board, monitoring plastic waste in marine ecosystems has helped provide comprehensive data on the status of coral reefs, the habitat of aquatic species, the impact of plastic waste, and livelihood on marine ecosystems. Flood wreaks havoc on central, southern Laos

(Photo: Xinhua/VNA) Vientiane (VNA) – Flood as a result of incessant rains in central and southern provinces of Laos has disrupted transport and inundated a number of houses and a vast area of crops. Local media reported that the central province of Savannakhet is one of the localities hit hardest by downpours and flood over the past days. Its Thapangthong district has been severely impacted with dozens of houses flood ed and some washed away while many fields of crops under water. The provincial administration has mobilised military personnel to help evacuate residents, livestock, and assets to safe places. Many areas in the southern provinces of Champasak, Sekong, Attapeu, and Salavan have also been flooded due to prolonged downpours.
