Torrential rain sinks streets, houses in northern Vietnamese province
Multiple streets and houses in Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam were severely inundated following a heavy downpour on Thursday evening. The provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention and rescue told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Friday that local authorities were dealing with the aftermath of the rain and calculating the total damage it had done. The downpour that lasted for over an hour started battering Lao Cai City, which is the provincial capital, and several districts in Lao Cai Province at around 8:00 pm on Thursday. SANSE prepares youth for sustainable development
Can you give an overview of SANSE, its goals, and past results? Nguyen Trang Linh, head of development at SANSE, founded in 2016 by students at the United Nations International School in Hanoi SANSE’s mission is to promote the sustainable growth of impoverished, geographically challenged, and agriculturally dependent regions in Vietnam; foster an understanding and connection between urban and rural communities; and promote the local educational systems and other learning opportunities as a tool to assist the sustainable growth of rural regions in Vietnam. We’re currently working to achieve these goals in the ethnic Tay village of Ban Lien in Lao Cai by providing infrastructure and education. ETC system: insufficient balance accounts occupy 80 percent of transaction error

Prolonged spells of heavy rains to continue over localities nationwide
Specifically, rainfalls in parts of Son La, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Quang Ninh, Hung Yen, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Lam Dong, Thai Binh and Yen Bai provinces averaged between 64 mm and 127mm. Last night, Lao Cai City experienced intense rainfall for an hour submerging seriously streets in the city. Many people had no place to sleep and had to move their furniture and properties to higher places overnight because rainwater flooded their houses. Many vehicles were also submerged in the water. Whirlwinds blew up roofs of houses and uprooted trees. VEC removes minimum balance regulation in expressways
Illustrative photo: SGGP According to the VEC, after nearly a week of putting the ETC system into exploitation , the fact that vehicles without ETC cards or insufficient balance on account is still being happening, causing high pressure for the management and exploitation and triggering congestion at non-stop toll collection stations. To handle the situation, the VEC issued an official letter to require vehicle owners and drivers to maintain minimum balance when traveling to non-stop toll collection stations. Accordingly, drivers have to maintain a balance amount of VND150,000 (US$6.4) when traveling to Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway, VND100,000 (US$4.3) to Da Nang – Quang Ngai Expressway, VND40,000 (US$1.7) in Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay and VND35,000 (US$1.5) in Cau Gie – Ninh Binh Expressway. U.N. Women, Japan launch project to reduce COVID-19 impacts on women and girls
The project aims to support about 5,000 poor and vulnerable women in nine provinces and cities, including Hanoi, Da Nang, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang, Nghe An, Thai Binh and Lao Cai. The priority targets are women at risk of violence, those with disabilities, migrant workers, ethnic minorities, people working in the informal sector and those living in disaster-prone areas. Apart from receiving the COVID-19 prevention kits, which include test kits, medical masks and anti-bacteria gel, the beneficiaries will also be equipped with the necessary skills to prevent and respond to COVID-19, disasters, gender-based violence and information about the available support services.
