US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV) recently signed a financing agreement for $37 million in DFC financing for FUV’s new campus in Ho Chi Minh City. Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh witnessed the signing ceremony on May 12 on the margins of the US-ASEAN Special Summit, a testament to the ongoing partnership between the United States Government, the Government of Vietnam, and the private sector to advance economic growth and opportunity in Vietnam. With support from the United States and Vietnamese governments, this project seeks to close the gap between the demand for skilled employees in Vietnam’s workforce and educational opportunities in the country, which currently falls short of what Vietnam and the region need for further development. Cargill extends access to education for ~400 children in rural Vietnam
The 105 th Cargill Cares school is located in the province’s remote mountainous Muong Lat District which has an underprivileged and largely ethnic minority population, where the pre-existing school had been requiring urgent repair and expansion. No access to electricity, heating or cooling in an area prone to sub-zero winters, and absence of administrative support like clean washrooms, insufficient infrastructure, and poor accessibility, often made just getting to school a daily challenge for students and faculty alike. Quang Chieu No. 1 Elementary School Muong Lat is known to be among the poorest areas in one of Vietnam’s poorest provinces, with the disaster prone region seeing a poverty rate over 17 times higher than the provincial average. Yet the importance of providing students in these remote areas the chance to get an education by providing proper infrastructure cannot be overlooked. Initially breaking ground before the pandemic, and with the subsequent … [Read more...] about Cargill extends access to education for ~400 children in rural Vietnam
We need to be mindful parents
While many chase a "perfect" life, they do not anticipate the pressure that comes with it, and are mentally ill-equipped to deal with the psychological stress. Those that do not see a way out end up taking their own lives as a means to the end. Our mind is a judging machine. When we experience something, usually our mind automatically thinks it's good, or bad. If the experience is pleasant, our mind hangs on to that feeling, and we want more of it. If the experience is unpleasant, we will try to hide, resist, and escape. And all other feelings are judged as "neutral", so we tend to forget it. There's nothing wrong with these judgments. It's natural for the mind to judge. Sometimes, these judgments are helpful. They can help us to understand why we like to do certain things, and why something makes us upset. The problem starts when we allow our mind to judge automatically too often and too much. We must always have a balance in everything. Sometimes too much of a good thing is not … [Read more...] about We need to be mindful parents
Adolescents engage in early sexual activities at ‘alarming’ rate
She was recently admitted to the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Hanoi in critical condition. Dr Phan Chi Thanh of the hospital’s department of examination says patients like Mai could require a hysterectomy and face the risk of no longer being able to have children if not treated promptly. When Mai and her high school boyfriend discovered she was pregnant, they were both confused and scared, and decided to get an abortion done at an illegal clinic. But the pregnancy was already too advanced and the procedure was done at an unsanitary facility. Thanh says many adolescents do not want to get abortions done at public hospitals and so go to unlicensed clinics or do it by themselves at deserted places to prevent others from finding out. After having sex without a condom at the age of 14, Nguyen Ngoc Ha Mai developed bumps on her body and the doctor diagnosed her as having genital warts, a sexually transmitted disease. Mai’s boyfriend did not get the disease at … [Read more...] about Adolescents engage in early sexual activities at ‘alarming’ rate

Crafting complete enterprise and investment laws
Riccardo Verzella Senior associate (left) and Ho Ngoc Diep Legal advisor, D’Andrea & Partners Legal Counsel Some new innovations of the aforesaid regulations are more relevant compared to the previous FDI regime, and certain aspects may be further optimised with the aim of improving the ease of doing business in Vietnam for overseas investors. Market access rules were significantly improved under the amended LoI. Before its implementation, based on the previous law, the allowed business fields for foreign investors were only those expressly referred to in a permitted list as mentioned therein. As Vietnam reopens its borders to tourism, attracting, developing and retaining a quality workforce has become the top priority for this industry.
