Over 5.1 trillion VND (242 million USD) will be injected into building Quang Ninh International Airport in Van Don Island District, north-eastern Quang Ninh Province, according to official plans. The airport, to span 285ha in Doan Ket Commune, will have runways 3,000m x 45m in size to allow the operation of long-range and wide-body Boeing 777s. Accordingly, construction will be carried out in two phases, with the first stage undertaken between now and 2020. By 2020, the airport will have at least four aprons and be able to handle 2 million passengers and 10,000 tonnes of goods per annum. By 2030, it will be expanded to have seven aprons, with the capacity to handle 5 million passengers and 30,000 tonnes per year. Viet Nam snares three golds at international maths contest
HA NOI (VNS)— The 6-strong Vietnamese team bagged three gold medals and three silvers at the 54th International Mathematical Olympiad that finished yesterday in Columbia. The Ministry of Education and Training announced on Saturday that the three gold medals went to gifted students from schools in HCM City and the central province of Ha Tinh, while the silvers were secured by their peers from Hanoi, the northern province of Vinh Phuc and the central province of Nghe An. The results helped Viet Nam rank 7th among the 97 participating countries and territories – the country's best performance since 2008. Giant international airport forecast
HA NOI (VNS)— A huge airport capable of handling 100 million passengers a year was needed in the south of Viet Nam, said Nguyen Nguyen Hung, chairman of the Airports Corporation of Viet Nam (ACV) on Thursday. Hung told Viet Nam News that Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City was only designed to receive 25 million passengers per year and would be overloaded by 2020. Hung said the corporation must start Long Thanh International Airport in the neighbouring province of Dong Nai, 35km from the centre of HCM City to ease the burden. He said the first phase of the project needed US$7.8 billion to build and relocate 10,000 people from the site.
