The third deputy health minister has been selected by the Vietnamese government, while the seat of the ministry’s head remains unoccupied following the retirememt of former Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien last month. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has signed a decision to appoint Do Xuan Tuyen as Deputy Minister of Health. Tuyen, 53, was deputy secretary of the Party Committee and chairman of the People’s Council in the northern province of Hung Yen before assuming the new post. He graduated from Military Medical University and was previously director of the medicine center of Hung Yen, the capital city of the namesake province. Minister issues directives to help mentally-ill man in Ha Nam
Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung has instructed local authorities in Ha Nam Province to provide support to an elderly woman and her son who has schizophrenia. Thu feeds her son through the cage Duong Thi Thu, 74, in Ly Nhan District’s Dong Ly Commune said that her son Duong Van Toan, 35, has been living with mental problems for 17 years. Toan is now being kept in an iron cage to prevent him from attacking other people. Thu has to feed her son through the cage every day. Their meals are very poor with just rice and some sesame and salt and then she usually takes leftover food. “My husband died 20 years ago. My son was in good health until he was 18 years old. Since then, he has been suffering from mental problems,” Thu said. Thailand ceases licensing agricultural chemicals
Farmers spray chemicals on a rice paddy in Ayutthaya.(Photo: bangkokpost.com) Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Mananya Thaiseth on August 9 ordered the Department of Agriculture to put the brakes on licence extensions for hazardous farm chemicals, and vowed to ban three substances by the end of this year. She affirmed the determination to ban the three chemicals, namely paraquat, glyphosate and chloropyrifos, within the year, as well as find alternatives to replace the trio. “Toxic farm chemicals are in the food we eat, and enter into the water, soil and environment”, she told the media. She said she will inspect stockpiles of hazardous chemicals and lead a meeting on August 20, which is expected to pave the way for the ban on these three chemicals. Heroism, devastation after deadly N. Zealand volcano eruption
Tales of heroism, devastation and horrifying injuries emerged Tuesday after New Zealand's smouldering White Island volcano exploded, killing an estimated 13 people. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said five people had died and eight more were presumed dead after Monday's eruption, while dozens of injured had been airlifted to hospitals across the country. Among the 47 people caught on the island during the sudden eruption were tourists from Australia, the United States, Britain, China, Germany and Malaysia, as well as local tour guides. Amid questions over why tourists were allowed to visit the volcano, police announced a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the deaths and injuries.
