When downpours turned life upside down in Hanoi
The 29-year-old works in Hanoi’s flood-prone Cau Giay District. "After it flooded twice, I’m scared and have to check my weather app every day to make sure to return home early if it forecasts rain," she says, describing her experience of getting caught in the recent rainstorms as a "nightmare." The ride between home and office used to take 15 minutes, but these days it takes over one hour. In late May her bike broke down in the middle of a flooded street. She had to wait for the rainwater to ebb before calling a relative to come and help her push the bike home. The following morning she took a break from work to take her bike to a nearby repair shop and found three or four other customers waiting in line with the same problem. During the second flooding episode on June 13, luckily her bike did not break down. But she had to spend a lot of time driving in the chaotic traffic, which had come to a standstill on many streets. "Now, whenever it starts to rain, I return home … [Read more...] about When downpours turned life upside down in Hanoi
Construction waste dumping recurs in Hanoi
Waste from construction projects is being abandoned without permission at vacant lots in many districts across Hanoi as the issue remains unresolved. The waste varies from debris and rocks to used furniture. Wherever it piles up, household waste follows suit just a few days later. “On sunny days, the stench permeates my store, while on rainy days, the dumped garbage bags float on the road,” said Nguyen Hoang Anh, the 42-year-old owner of a beer store on Duong Dinh Nghe Street in Cau Giay District. “We tried to find the litterers but could not catch them because they often dump the waste before dawn when few people are on the street.” Construction waste is dumped at an empty field along Duong Dinh Nghe Street in Cau Giay District, Hanoi. Vietnamese authorities determined to relocate seaside hotels in famous beach cities
Authorities in the famous resort cities of Nha Trang and Quy Nhon in south-central Vietnam have announced their plans to relocate several hotels from local beaches, but residents are still in doubt as they have heard similar schemes before. On Thursday last week, Evason Ana Mandara Resort in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province was closed so that it could be moved to another location. Like many other residents, Nguyen Van Tho remains skeptical after hearing this news, stating that the resort was still there after three terms of provincial chairmanship. “Every time the authorities issued an ultimatum, they ended up allowing the resort developer to renew the contract so that the venue could remain on the valuable land plot for some extra years,” Tho elaborated. Built in 1997, Evason Ana Mandara Resort, originally Ana Mandara, covers an area of 28,000 square meters on the coast located east of Tran Phu Street. In 2011, the Khanh Hoa administration required the resort to terminate … [Read more...] about Vietnamese authorities determined to relocate seaside hotels in famous beach cities
Cooperation bringing Vietnamese tourism to new heights
Cooperation bringing Vietnam-ese tourism to new heights Changes in tourist behaviour and intentions, along with challenges in the context of a gradual recovery of the industry, are affecting the development strategies of Vietnam’s leading tourism-hotel groups. Corporations such as Sun Group, Vingroup, Bitexco, and CEO Group are leaning toward cooperating with international hotel management groups instead of building and developing their own resorts as before. This approach seems to be helping domestic and international brands take advantage of each other’s strengths, with one side possessing economic potential and market knowledge while the other brings brand name and management experience. Marriott International, on June 22, signed a strategic agreement with Vinpearl, Vietnam’s largest hospitality and leisure chain, which currently operates 35 hotels and resorts spanning 17 cities and provinces. The agreement will contribute to converting and developing 2,200 rooms across … [Read more...] about Cooperation bringing Vietnamese tourism to new heights
