(Photo: VNA) Hai Phong (VNA) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has suggested the northern port city of Hai Phong invest in technology and digital economy, and attract high-tech businesses to gain higher added values. Hai Phong must be one of the country’s leading cities in the digital economy, PM Phuc said at a working session on May 10 with the Standing Board of the municipal Party Committee. Besides, the city should pay more attention to logistics, towards becoming the largest logistics centre in the country, developing modern seaports meeting international standards, attracting airlines to open more domestic and international flights from Cat Bi International Airport, he said. Hai Phong taps sea, island tourism potential
As the largest seaport in Vietnam’s northern region, Hai Phong city boasts huge potential for tourism development, especially sea-based tourism. Featuring a coastline of 125 km with more than 400 islands and islets, Hai Phong boats its potential for developing sea-based tourism which contributes over 42 percent to the sector’s revenue annually. Locally, Do Son and Cat Ba are the two major attractions in its tourism development plan. Of the two, Cat Ba, a world biosphere reserve, has much room for investment. According to Hai Phong’s department of tourism, Cat Ba island has become a more and more popular destination of many tourists, attracting one third of tourists to the city. The city’s administration has designated Bach Long Vy island district and Cat Ba and Do Son tourism sites as major attractions in its tourism development plan. Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Cat Hai island district Hoang Trung Cuong said tourism accounts for about 70 percent of state budget collection of the locality, while creating jobs for 5,000 workers. Tourism is now the driving force of the island district’s economic development. Booming hotel and resort projects now offer 28,000 rooms – 10 times as many as in 2007 – for the 15 million tourists expected to visit the city in 2030. Chairman of the city’s tourism association, Huynh Tan Vinh, said tourism also created 140,000 jobs for local and neighbouring employees – 25 per cent of the city’s labour force.
