Poor children learn to read, write at Ha Noi charity house (19-04-2005) The model for a charity house in the province of Quang Nam, with modern educational facilities, is expected to expand nationwide with help from social organisations in an attempt to bring education to orphans and homeless children. — VNA/VNS Photo Duong Ngoc HA NOI — Phuc Xa charity house is bringing reading and writing skills, free-of-charge, to the children of impoverished Hong (Red) River fishermen in the capital city. The 10sq.m house everyday gathers about 20 children from families which subsist on fishing from the river. The children are of different ages, but all have become more self-confident since meeting the house’s teaching volunteers who are college and university students in the city. Nine-year-old Vu Thi Mai, who lives with her family in the fishing hamlet under Long Bien Bridge, said she is going to finish the first grade at the house. Ha Noi students start war on plastic bags (07-04-2009) by Thu Van HA NOI — Students who won US$2,000 for promoting environmental protection will spend the money to help stop people using plastic bags. And they will employ workers from the Thanh Nha Disabled Centre, Ha Noi, to help do the job by making EcoBags from used banners, canvas and backdrops. The students are members of the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) sponsored 3R-HN Club – Re-use, Reduce and Recycle – and are intent on changing people’s attitude to environmental protection through the use of eco-bags. Inspiration Project leader Dang Thi Lan Ngoc, 20, and her team launched the campaign after winning money website www.vicongdong.vn offered for the best contribution to "Give Me an Ecology Bag" contest earlier this year. Ha Noi students win big in ‘UK Now’ competition (11-04-2006) The final round of an English competition entitled UK Now opened at Melia Hotel last Saturday, wrapping up with unpredictable results as both of the top prizes were given to two students of the Ha Noi-Amsterdam High School. The competition, organised by British Council in Viet Nam and Hoa Hoc Tro (Student Flower) newspaper, lured the attention of high school students nationwide since its launch on February 20 of this year. Soon after the crosswords and multiple choice questions about the UK were printed in Hoa Hoc Tro newspaper for the first time, the competition’s organising committee received replies from different regions. Four hundred lucky entrants were selected to join the second round-a writing competition in English-and only eight students were selected to the final speaking contest. HA NOI — A 17-year-old, who has just graduated from the Ha Noi-Amsterdam Elite High School, has won Viet Nam Television's national quiz show and with it a US$35,000 scholarship to study abroad. Phan Minh Duc beat three others in the final of the year-long Route to Olympia Peak gameshow which VTV3 broadcast live on Sunday. The other contenders were Nguyen Huu Phuoc of Binh Phuoc Province's Quang Trung High School and Do Duc Hieu and Giang Thanh Tung of Thanh Hoa Province's Le Loi and Sam Son high schools. The four had won their respective quarterly-level shows after starting in a weekly show. HA NOI — Kieu Thuy Van of the Thach That high school won the special prize at the final round of the Ha Noi Millennium English Contest, jointly held by Apollo English and the Department of Education and Training of Ha Noi, sponsored by Nokia Ovi-Chat, which took place yesterday in Ha Noi. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram of the Ha Noi-Amsterdam high school received first prize, Nguyen Thai Hoang of the Thang Long high school achieved second prize and Nguyen Hong Hanh and Nguyen Le Van Anh, both from the Son Tay high school, shared third prize. Luong The Vinh High School began selling registration forms for the sixth and tenth grades on Monday, and all 1,600 forms were sold out at the school's locations in Cau Giay and Thanh Xuan in the morning, according to the school's Board of Management chairman, Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong. "We will continue to print and sell more forms. The forms are unlimited, so parents shouldn't be too worried," Cuong said. The contest has been organised since 2006 by Panasonic Viet Nam, in conjunction with the ministries of education and training, environment and natural resources.— File Photo HA NOI (VNS)— Five students from Ha Noi–based M.V Lomonosov Secondary School have been awarded top prize at the 8th Kids Witness News Viet Nam contest for their movie The Most Important Thing. One million trees project takes root in Ha Noi

HA NOI -- (VNS) Approximately 150 trees were planted in Ha Noi-Amsterdam High School this morning, as the programme to plant one million trees in schools nationwide began to branch out. At the ceremony, the school's deputy headmaster Le Thi Oanh said the programme aims to create green space for schools and improve students' awareness of the importance of planting trees and protecting the environment. More 110 trees are also expected to be planted in Luong The Vinh High School today. The programme, jointly run by the Vietnam Environment Administration, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Vinamilk Corporation, will continue in schools in northern Hai Phong City, central Da Nang City, plus many other cities in the country. Ha Noi students win filmmaking prize

Future stars: The Ha Noi-Amsterdam team took first prize for their their film One New Message. — VNS Photo Thu Phuong HA NOI — The Ha Noi-Amsterdam school has beaten five other secondary schools to win first prize in a movie making competition organised by technology giant Panasonic. The Kids Witness News contest accepted five-minute films entered by Vietnamese students aged between 10 and 15. The themes for the movies this year were communication and ecology. The second prize went to the Wellspring International School for The Bodyguard and the third prize was awarded to Marie Curie Secondary School for their entry Light Pollution. Phan Chu Trinh's Danger from Water Spinach was awarded the best documentary. The winning film, titled One New Message, tells the story of a group of people (including students and teachers, lovers, and a mother and son) who use mobile phones to communicate with each other rather than the traditional oral mode of communication.
