ASEAN – a unique growth story 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of ASEAN, which is a unique achievement considering the conflicts and poverty which characterised the region in the first half of the 20th century. Since its inception, ASEAN has not only doubled its membership, but has also successfully weathered both the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and the global economic crisis of 2008–2009, to become the sixth-largest economy globally. Photo by Reuters Eighty Southeast Asian startups will take part in the World Economic Forum on ASEAN meeting in Hanoi from Tuesday to Thursday. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The Prime Minister has inked Decision No.395/QD-TTg on the establishment of the organising committee for the World Economic Forum on ASEAN (WEF ASEAN) scheduled in Hanoi this year. Standing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son is assigned as head of the organising committee. Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of the Government Office Nguyen Xuan Thanh and Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Van Thao will serve as its deputy heads. The committee is tasked to support the Government and the Prime Minister in the preparation and organisation of the forum while coordinating with relevant ministries, agencies, localities and businesses in the process.
