(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s finswiming pioneers are aiming to claim 6-8 out of the 13 gold medals on offer at the ongoing 31st Southeast Asia Games ( SEA Games 31 ). When the sport was introduced at the 2003 SEA Games, Vietnam as the host swept 13 out of the 16 golds at stake, while in Laos 2009 and Indonesia 2011 took four and six golds, respectively. Besides Thailand and the Philippines, Indonesia is growing stronger in the sport with many talented athletes, whose stats are on par with Vietnam’s top finswimmers in some categories. The hosts set four new records on the first day of the competition. Nguyen Thanh Loc finished first and broke the SEA Games record with a time of 34.82sec in the men's 100m surface event. His result passed the old record of 36.94 set by Nguyen Trung Kien in the 2011 Games in Indonesia. Pham Thi Thu added the second in the women's 100m surface event. She won with a time of 40.41sec, another record. The previous best time of 40.61sec was set by Thu in qualification. On May 22, the last day of competition, Vietnamese finswimmers set four new SEA Games record and pocketed five gold medals. Veteran Nguyen Thanh Loc finished first in the men's 50m surface, setting a record of 15.60 sec. Indonesian Wahyu Anggoro Tamtomo was second (15.83 sec) and Thai Khet Chamnanwat third (16.12 sec). Pham Thi Kim Thuong overcame all other rivals in the women's 800m surface with her personal best of 7:19.18 min. Indonesian Andhini Muthia Maulida (7:28.67 min) and her compatriot Katherina Eda Rahayu (7:31.72 min) were second and third, respectively. In the relay event, the Vietnamese triumphed the men's 4x100m surface. Their time of 2:25.57 min is a new SEA Games record. Thailand (2:30.74 min) and Indonesia (2:31.06 min) were the two runners-up. (Photo: VNA) Bangkok (VNA) - Thailand won 92 gold medals to finish second at SEA Games 31 hosted by Vietnam from May 12-23, while the host topped the overall standings with a record haul of 205 golds. Although Thailand were a distant second in Vietnam, Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) Governor Gongsak Yodmani said he was pleased with his athletes' efforts. He argued that the Thais did very well in several " international sports " particularly athletics, swimming, tennis, badminton and table tennis. The SAT had projected that the Thai contingent would win 112 gold medals, including 72 in international sports. The SAT will later assess the overall performance to use in preparations for the 32nd SEA Games to be held in Cambodia next year, he said.
