A recent sparring match between a Canadian Wing Chun master and his Vietnamese karate counterpart in Hanoi has left local officials confused about whether, and how, martial art duels should be regulated. The sparring match between Canadian Wing Chun master Pierre Francois Flores and Vietnamese karate master Doan Bao Chau in Hanoi on Wednesday had been much anticipated by the Vietnamese public, though for reasons not related to the match-up itself. Flores received public attention in Vietnam after he sent a challenge to Huynh Tan Kiet, founder and grand master of Nam Huynh Dao, a school of Vietnamese martial arts, stating his wish to verify Kiet’s so-called ‘electricity channeling’ technique. Nguyen Van Chieu, the master of Vietnam’s martial arts discipline Vovinam, will be featured on the ‘Human to Hero’ program of the U.S.-based international TV channel CNN on November 26 and 27. A CNN camera crew visited Ho Chi Minh City and recorded images of the master and his instructors while training and teaching techniques at Phu Tho sports house on November 8. They also filmed a series of spectacular acts of attacking and defending performed by the master and his fellows. In a letter sent to Nguyen Binh Dinh, deputy general secretary of the Southeast Asian Vovinam Federation and Vietnam Vovinam Federation, CNN announced that the feature about Vovinam and master Chieu will be aired at 12:00 and 22:30 (GMT) on November 26 and 27. Vietnamese martial art Vovinam will be featured in an action film to be shot by this year-end under the cooperation of a Cambodian royal official and a Hollywood film director and actor. The film was initiated by H.E. Oknha Rat Sokhorn, who is skillful at the Vietnamese martial art, and Hollywood film director Ace Cruz. The film “Fight for Life” tells the story of a Cambodian boy who rises to fame thanks to the Vovinam ring. His mother gets raped by an illegal Thai logger when she is 17 years old and gives birth to him. His father is later killed by other loggers and his mother has to prostitute herself to raise him. Martial arts documentary wins Italian award Quang Ngai Province’s Radio – Television on Thursday announced that its sport documentary named Doi vo or Martial Arts Life won the Guirlande D’Honneur 2010 award in the sports individual category at the 2010 Sport Movies and TV competition in Milan, Italy, reports Thanh Nien newspaper. Doi vo is a touching documentary about a dedicated martial arts teacher named Ngo Bong, born in Nghia Dien Commune, Tu Nghia District, Quang Ngai Province who devoted his life to the growth of Hung Ke Quyen (Bravery Cock Fighting Style) a once-famous traditional fighting style originating from Binh Dinh Province.
