G7 touts $600 bn global infrastructure plan to rival China

June 27, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net Leave a Comment

The Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, unveiled with fanfare by U.S. President Joe Biden and G7 allies from Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Union, aims to fill a huge gap left as communist China uses its economic clout to stretch diplomatic tentacles into the furthest reaches of the world. Biden said the target was for the United States to bring $200 billion to the table, with the rest of the G7 another $400 billion by 2027. Funding the kinds of projects that China currently dominates -- everything from roads to harbours in far-flung corners of the world -- is not "aid or charity," Biden said. Highlighting the geostrategic thinking behind the plan, Biden said such projects "deliver returns for everyone, including the American people and the people of all our nations." Around the world, the role of China's democratic rivals is "a chance for us to share our positive vision for the future" and for other countries to "see for themselves the … [Read more...] about G7 touts $600 bn global infrastructure plan to rival China

Dengue fever turns severe as patients miss early checkups: doctor

Pham Van Quang, head of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital No. 1, said in most cases, dengue fever patients and their families had ignored warning signs when contracting the disease, creating the opportunity for it to get serious. When experiencing a high body temperature, the most typical early symptom of dengue fever, most patients had chosen to be treated at home, said Quang. After the high fever had gone, those people assumed they had already recovered. However, for dengue fever, the period following high fever is the most critical, and patients must be carefully monitored every step of the way, he said. So far, patients with dengue fever were only brought to hospitals when they had already developed severe symptoms like lethargy, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, and severe abdominal pain. By then, it is very easy for the patient to suffer septic shock while the risk of fatality is high, the doctor added. In other cases, dengue fever … [Read more...] about Dengue fever turns severe as patients miss early checkups: doctor

Crackdown on sidewalk encroachment along West Lake’s banks a wasted effort in Hanoi

June 27, 2022 by tuoitrenews.vn Leave a Comment

Hanoi authorities’ campaigns to solve sidewalk encroachment caused by street hawkers on the banks of the West Lake have proved to be water off a duck’s back as the issue recurs after every crackdown. The West Lake, which is the capital’s biggest freshwater reservoir located in Tay Ho District, has long been a favorite spot for young people to hang out, leading to the emergence of street stalls along its banks. Street hawkers rake in money from visitors to the lake by displaying their wares on the banks to sell street food and beverages even though that means the sidewalk there is partly or completely blocked. The encroachment has prompted local authorities to roll out multiple crackdowns, which have turned out to be wasted labor as the street stalls crept back in a few days.
