Inspired by non-objective abstract expressionists such as Joseph Albas and Mark Rothkoe and drawing on Vietnamese and other Asian cultural artistic traditions, this series utilizes lacquer work and gold leaf in contemporary ways. Hanoi Times – People’s Artist Quach Thi Ho not only holds the secret to the almost dead art of ca tru (choral chamber music), but seeks to revive it by sharing her gift with the world. Ca tru artisan Quach Thi Ho died seven years ago but her wonderful ca tru songs are still preserved carefully by those who loved her. A special program was held on January 13 at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi for the anniversary of Mrs Ho’s death. UNESCO has given feedback about Vietnam’s ca tru file. Director of the Music Institute, Le Toan, talked about the compilation of the ca tru file and how to restore this art. We had to stop compiling the ca tru file for a long time in 2006 because UNESCO changed the form of recognition of intangible hertigages. Did we have to amend the file much to fit new criteria? We had been compiling the file for over one year when UNESCO changed its criteria for choosing heritages. We had to add more information to the file, but the old data was not redundant. There is a controversy about the birth of ca tru. Some say that it appeared in the 11th century and others say in the 15th century. What is the Music Institute’s opinion about it? Historical documents dating back to the 11th century have some words about ca tru but they are unclear. It was not until the 15th century when ca tru flourished to become a type of art. British singing star Adele continued her current pop reign with a leading four nominations for the 2011 American Music Awards announced on Tuesday, edging out the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Adele, 23, who was recently forced to cancel the remainder of her sold out U.S. tour due to a vocal chord hemorrhage, was nominated for favorite rock/pop female artist, adult contemporary artist, album with her "21" and artist of the year for the awards to be broadcast from Los Angeles on November 20. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Lil Wayne and country music group The Band Perry were nominated three times, followed by artists such as Bruno Mars and Beyonce with two nods each. Besides Adele, other artist of the year contenders are Gaga, Wayne, Swift and Perry, whose album "Teenage Dream" two months ago achieved the rare distinction of having five singles reach the top of the Billboard's pop songs chart.
