Hanoi (VNA) - As the most important event of the year in Vietnam, Tet (Lunar New Year) offers many traditional customs, including calligraphy. Calligraphy expresses the Vietnamese people’s respect for knowledge. Before Tet, people receive calligraphic works in Vietnamese, Chinese and Han-Nom (Chinese Han and Vietnamese Nom ideographic) scripts from elderly scholars. The scripts are written on beautiful do (poohnah) paper and become symbols of good fortune. “Receiving and giving calligraphic works have become a fine tradition of the Vietnamese people,” said Le Xuan Kieu, Director of the Centre for Scientific and Cultural Activities of Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam, where the Spring Calligraphy Festival is hosted annually. The centre has cooperated with the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports to organise the festival at Van (Literature) Lake beside the Temple of Literature from January 29 to February 17. Hanoi (VNA) - Ha Thai lacquerware is now enjoying a new vitality and has established a firm position among the famous craft villages in Vietnam, with most of its products being exported. The Ha Thai lacquerware craft village is located right next to Highway 1A, in Thuong Tin district of Hanoi. It was formerly named Cu Trang, but renamed as Dong Thai in 1870 and Ha Thai in the early years of the 20th century. History has it that the trade started in Ha Thai in the 17th century. The village is not the cradle of the trade but famous for its contingent of craftsmen. In the first part of the 1930’s, Vietnam’s first painters studying at the Indochina Fine Arts College applied new colour materials like egg and snail shell and bamboo, and especially the polishing technique, to the art, thus creating really valuable artworks.
