"Quang Hai will gradually get better. He came all the way from Vietnam and his family is not here. He also cannot speak French or English, so everything was quite challenging. But Hai is a warrior. He has good skills with agility so I think he will quickly find an important position in the squad," Laporte-Fray told French newspaper La Republique des Pyrenees on Thursday. Hai’s debut in France’s second division Ligue 2 was not complete as Pau FC lost 0-4 to Guingamp. Hai played the last 30 minutes of the game and although he couldn’t make a difference, he was still the second highest-rated player of Pau FC in that game, with 13 touches, a pass accuracy of 100 percent and two chances from set pieces. Hai signed a two-year contract with Pau FC on June 30, becoming the first Vietnamese player to play in a professional football league in France. Pau FC have been supportive of the 25-year-old midfielder to adapt to a new environment. Currently, he is being assisted by a French … [Read more...] about French club president compliments Vietnam star midfielder after league debut

Midfielder Quang Hai gets more play time in second match for French club Pau FC
After a solid performance in the opening match of the French second division league against Guingamp FC, coach Didier Tholot picked Hai instead of Eddy Sylvestre to play as the main midfielder. Hai had joined the previous game as a substitute in the 60th minute when his club was trailing hosts Guingamp FC 0-4. In the match against Dijon FC, the 25-year-old player had more possession of the ball and created many assists and offensive opportunities for his team. In the 12th minute, he had a shot at the goal, but his volley went wide. In the 20th minute, he created a chance to score for teammate Sessi D'Almeida, who also missed his shot at the goal. Invisible for portraiture: An encounter with French-Vietnamese photographer Lam Duc Hien
Photographer Lam Duc Hien of World Press Photo Contest fame sat down with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper during his time at the 2022 Hue Festival to reflect on the portraits that made his name, the life-or-death experiences, and the state of modern photojournalism after spending three decades in the ever-changing industry. How did you get your start in photography? At the beginning, I did not even plan to do photography professionally. It started when I joined a non-governmental organization (NGO) because I want to help people. I went to Romania with them in 1990 and they asked me to take pictures. [In 1990, the country was experiencing perpetual social unrest and political battles following the Romanian Revolution in December 1989]. The pictures were used in campaigns to raise money for Romanian children, and after that, the NGO said they got a lot of donations. It made me understand the power of a picture - a good one can help mobilize a lot of money. They [the NGO] then … [Read more...] about Invisible for portraiture: An encounter with French-Vietnamese photographer Lam Duc Hien
Ex-president of Vietnamese support center gets life sentence for scamming 1,000 people
The former president of a support center for poor people in Vietnam was sentenced to life in prison for scamming more than 1,000 victims and appropriating over VND49 billion (US$2 million). The Hanoi People’s Court concluded an eight-day trial on Tuesday and sentenced Tran Duc Trung, 61, former chairman of the member council of a local support center for the poor, to life in prison for fraud and property appropriation. The indictment showed that the support center was established in 2013 but did not have a legitimate license or any revenue generating activities. In April 2015, the defendants organized a program named ‘Heart of Vietnam,’ tricking participants into depositing their money and promising support with high interest rates. UK recognizes Vietnam’s new passport
"The U.K. currently continues to recognize the new Vietnamese passport. Visa applicants and travelers (including those in transit) should ensure they are fully aware of, and regularly checked, the situation on acceptance of these documents for all their destination(s)," it said in a Facebook post. Before the U.K., France had said last week it would recognize Vietnam’s new passport and issue visas to holders "until further notice." Yet the French Embassy in Vietnam recommended that visa applicants holding the new Vietnamese passports exclude their duration of stay or transit time in Germany. They are also asked to update their information, as "the situation can change rapidly." On Tuesday, the Czech Republic became the third country not recognizing Vietnam's new passports after Germany and Spain. All three countries explained their refusal as the exclusion of birthplace information. It is still not clear if the Czech Republic would stop issuing visas for the new Vietnamese … [Read more...] about UK recognizes Vietnam’s new passport
Analysis: As wheat prices soar, the world’s consumers vote with their feet
Global wheat consumption is headed for its biggest annual decline in decades as record inflation forces consumers and companies to use less and replace the grain with cheaper alternatives, amid growing food insecurity. Consumers may face even higher wheat prices in the second half of 2022 as importers, who until now have supplied cargoes bought several months earlier at cheaper prices, pass on the costs from when wheat prices scaled decade highs in May. Global wheat consumption in July-December could drop by 5%-8% from a year ago, analysts, traders and millers say, much faster than the U.S. Department of Agriculture's forecast 1% contraction. "There is going to be a drop in wheat demand for animal feed in Europe and China. Wheat demand for human consumption has also slowed in key importing countries around the world," said Erin Collier, an economist at UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation. "High prices have raised food security worries in parts of Asia and Africa where … [Read more...] about Analysis: As wheat prices soar, the world’s consumers vote with their feet

The United Kingdom has announced that they will continue to accept Vietnam's new passports which have recently been rejected by some other countries in the European Union due to missing place-of-birth information. The UK is the second country to have accepted the new Vietnamese passports. Earlier, the French embassy also said that the French authorities will continue to accept Vietnam's new-style passports and issue visas to their holders as normal. Meanwhile, Germany, the Czech Republic and Spain have announced that they do not accept those passports due to the omission of the province/city of birth information, causing difficulties for personal identification.
