For 14 days, 5,000 Laotians received free treatment and medical support from medical practitioners from Vietnam, as part of a volunteer project. The regular volunteering trip involving Vietnamese doctors to Laos was halted for two years following the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that crossing the border is again possible, the young Vietnamese doctors made their way to the people of Attapeu and Champasak Provinces. Besides providing treatment and drugs, the Vietnamese volunteers spent time holding professional talks with their Laotian counterparts. This is the first year it has formed part of the Then Kin Pang festival. A highlight of the Ap Ho Chieng festival each year is the scene of beautiful women of White Thai ethnic minority group as they wash their hair together on the last day of the Lunar New Year. It was reenacted at Nam Lum spring in Khong Lao commune, Phong Tho district of Lai Chau. Photographer Lam Duc Hien of World Press Photo Contest fame sat down with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper during his time at the 2022 Hue Festival to reflect on the portraits that made his name, the life-or-death experiences, and the state of modern photojournalism after spending three decades in the ever-changing industry. How did you get your start in photography? At the beginning, I did not even plan to do photography professionally. It started when I joined a non-governmental organization (NGO) because I want to help people. I went to Romania with them in 1990 and they asked me to take pictures.
