City student excels at English-speaking contest in U.K. By Kieu Giang in HCMC Trinh Hoang Nam, 16, from HCMC-based Asian International School was named runner-up at the Cambridge English Best Young Speaker from Asia Competition held at Cambridge University in the U.K. Nam defeated contestants from China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia to win a scholarship for the Graduate Certificate in International Business offered by the University of Tasmania in Australia. Nam was also the youngest contestant among the nine finalists. “If you want to improve your English you should practice speaking English even at home to promote your self-confidence,” Nam said. His upcoming target is to achieve the CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) by Cambridge ESOL.This year’s winner was Indian student Sruthi Vijayachandran, 25, who has a Masters degree in Public Relations. They can go to Master's Cup, an ideal place to enjoy coffee, make more friends, and practice English in a pleasing environment Opened three years ago, Master's Cup is nestled in an alley in District 10. It looks like a cozy house with simple decorations, however, the atmosphere inside is animated and inviting, with many groups of people chattering freely together in English. "Master's Cup is special! We welcome all guests who want to make friends and speak English," said Mary, one of the eight American volunteers at the house. On every shift there are always two volunteers who are available to talk to customers and help them with their pronunciation. The contest has new features to bring new challenges to participants via a Model United Nations (MUN). This is an educational simulation and academic competition in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.
