The footage of the show has been shared widely on Facebook, with a wave of admiration for the small girl who talked confidently and naturally with the host entirely in English. The Hoang Hoa Tham High School in HCM City has been employing an English teacher from the US for the last many years. The teacher gives 16 teaching periods a week at the school and receives 20 dollars for a 45-minute period. Nguyen Dinh Thinh, Headmaster of the school, said that it would better for students to learn English with native speakers, so that they can speak English fluently and have good English pronunciation. Many other schools in HCM City also recruit foreign English teachers, a part of the program on renovating the current teaching and learning English method which is believed ineffective. These trainees are the latest of the 153 graduates who have studied in the language-training program sponsored by the UK Ministry of Defense five years ago. Education First's 2014 English Proficiency Index ranked Vietnam at “low proficiency.” The survey scored Vietnam at 51.57 and it ranked 33rd out of 63 non-native English speaking countries participating in the test, according to information released at a Hanoi conference on Monday. Vietnam ranked 28th on last year's index. Denmark came first on the list scoring 69.30, followed by the Netherlands and Sweden. Vietnam ranks above several countries in the region, such as China at rank 37, Thailand 48 and Cambodia 61. Adults in Ho Chi Minh City are a little bit more proficient than those in Hanoi, scoring 53.44 compared to 51.76, according to the report. The report also showed that Vietnamese women speak better English than men. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh from the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences said that English education in Vietnam is challenged by a lack of resources.
