According to the Vietnam E-Commerce and Digital Economy Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, a person spends an average of nearly 25 hours online every week, or over 3 hours per day. At the same time, nearly one third of Internet users conduct online shopping with expenditure of about 160 USD per person each year. HCM City (VNA) - Measures to address e-commerce related disputes between Vietnamese and Japanese firms were sought at a workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City on November 12. Themed “Cross-border e-commerce: Trend and opportunities”, the event was co-organised by the Vietnam E - Commerce and Information Technology Agency (VECITA) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The boom of e-commerce sees violations in online transactions are unavoidable, especially when Vietnam-Japan trade and investment links are being strengthened, said Bui Thanh Hang from the Ministry of Industry and Trade. VN retail e-commerce to earn US$10 billion by 2020
Vietnam’s potential for e-commerce development in the retail sector could achieve a US$10-billion revenue by 2020, accounting for half the country’s total retail sales. Data from the Association of Vietnam Retailers (AVR) indicates that in 2015, retail e-commerce surpassed US$4.07 billion, with a growth rate of 20%. Ho Thi Kim Thoa, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, told a forum on e-commerce and mobile phone technologies in Hanoi on December 8 that e-commerce was a vital development trend in the retail sector. Thoa said last year, the growth rate of the retail sector was 9.5%. Traditional retail made up 80%, while modern retail including supermarkets, convenience stores and e-commerce accounted for only 20%. “Notably, in the modern retail channels, the portion of e-commerce was at a low level of around 2.8%,” she added.
