Vietnam’s southern Ho Chi Minh City has seen numbers of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease and dengue fever in children increasing sharply, with six deaths of dengue having been recorded, the municipal Center for Disease Control (HCDC) reported on Friday. During the first four months of 2022, the city recorded 1,599 hand-foot-mouth disease cases, with 96 percent being children aged one to five years old. The number of hand-foot-mouth cases has increased alarmingly in most districts, including District 8, Binh Tan, Tan Phu, and Binh Chanh, and Thu Duc City. Notably, from May 6 to May 12 only, 628 patients were recorded, nearly three times higher than the average of the previous four weeks. Numbers of cases increased both in hospital treatment and outpatient examination across the city, the HCDC reported. To actively prevent the disease, it is necessary for both children and their caregivers to wash hands frequently with soap several times a day. It is advisable to eat … [Read more...] about Dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth cases on the rise in Ho Chi Minh City

Questions foreigners ask about Vietnam
This collection of little gems comes from exchanges with expats and tourists over the years – here in Vietnam, abroad at overseas living conferences and meetings, and, best of all for candid input, coffee shops and ‘belly up to the bar sessions’ in various places around the world. Conference attendees for the most part have never visited Vietnam, so their views are distant and often skewed, with eyes glossed over and wide open like saucers as reality is revealed. Do they use money in Vietnam or is there some type of bartering system? Seasoned veterans see that question as absurd, but to the uninitiated it’s a query worthy of clarification. Vietnam is often perceived by those from developed countries as a distant and eccentric country, while reality is it would be a struggle to find more business-oriented people anywhere in the world. I reply: “Cash is king. Just pop into a bank for a glimpse at how the commercial system works here, … [Read more...] about Questions foreigners ask about Vietnam

More lessons learnt from Xieng Khouang – Plain of Jars Victory in 1972
The victory proved the effective and timely collaboration between the Vietnamese and Lao forces and forces in the Southern theater in the strategic offensive in 1972, contributing to failing the “Vietnamization” strategy of the U.S. and the “Nixon doctrine.” It also reaffirmed that defensive is the obvious operation in the liberation war and added more theoretical and practical values to the art of combat at the operational level of Vietnam in the resistance war against the U.S. invaders. As the operation went, the Central Military Commission of Vietnam and the Lao side informed the Command of the Plain of Jars – Muong Sui Campaign about the intention: Right after the end of the offensive operation in the area, our forces would shift to the defensive posture at the operational level, ready to break down any counter-offensive operations of the enemy. With good preparation, by May 20, 1972, the coalition forces had completed the firm and continuous operational defensive disposition, … [Read more...] about More lessons learnt from Xieng Khouang – Plain of Jars Victory in 1972
Shanghai achieves ‘zero COVID’ status but normal life is weeks away
Shanghai achieved on Tuesday the long-awaited milestone of three consecutive days with no new COVID-19 cases outside quarantine zones but most residents will have put up with confinement for a while longer before a return to more normal life. For other cities in China that have been under lockdown, a third day with no new cases in the community usually means "zero COVID" status and the beginning of the lifting of restrictions. The commercial hub of 25 million set out on Monday its clearest timetable yet for exiting a lockdown now in its seventh week, but the plan was met with scepticism by many residents who have seen isolation extended time and again. Shanghai plans to resume outdoor activities in stages, with some convenience stores and pharmacies reopening this week, but with most restrictions on movement remaining in place until May 21, after which public transport and other services will resume gradually. By June, the lockdown should be lifted, but residents will still be … [Read more...] about Shanghai achieves ‘zero COVID’ status but normal life is weeks away
Vietnam defeat Malaysia to set up men’s football final against Thailand at 31st SEA Games
Defending champions Vietnam beat Malaysia 1-0 at Viet Tri Stadium in northern Phu Tho Province on Thursday night to set up an exciting Southeast Asian (SEA) Games men’s football final against archrivals Thailand. The game needed two extra 15-minute halves after regulation time to decide who will play the finale against the Thais, who also defeated Indonesia 1-0 after 120 minutes in the other semifinal earlier the same day. The hosts came into the tie having not conceded a single goal in the group stage and put more pressure on Malaysia in the first half after the first 10 cagey minutes. Malaysia had a shot on target from close range after a corner was half cleared, but Vietnamese goalkeeper Nguyen Van Toan was able to smother the effort easily. Nguyen Tien Linh almost opened the scoring in the 27th minute as he ran down and faced Malaysian keeper Azri Ghani, but his shot drifted wide of the far post. Linh missed another chance in the 42nd minute as he was in a convenient … [Read more...] about Vietnam defeat Malaysia to set up men’s football final against Thailand at 31st SEA Games
HCMC falls way short of bribes seizure target
In a report it sent to the Government Inspectorate on Wednesday, the city administration said it had appropriated VND1.3 trillion ($56.2 million). During the three months the city prosecuted 22 people in 12 bribery cases involving nearly VND6 trillion, it said. The city People’s Court heard 13 other cases in which 70 defendants and corruption to the tune of VND586 billion were involved. The report said statements related to corruption cases are "classified," which means the cases require a longer time to be processed. Besides, the progress of investigations is slow because the crimes had been committed years ago, making it difficult to collect documents and evidence, it added. … [Read more...] about HCMC falls way short of bribes seizure target
