Vietnam has 4th highest number of weekly Covid cases worldwide: WHO
Vietnam has been recording over 571,000 new Covid-19 cases a week on average, which is only behind South Korea (713,000 cases), the U.S. (760,000 cases) and Japan (1.4 million cases), according to a World Health Organization report. But the report did not mention Vietnam among countries with top Covid deaths. The WHO said the high numbers of recorded cases in Vietnam were partly because of extra data provided by certain localities, which were recorded since February. Over the past week, the northern port city of Hai Phong added another 402,830 cases to its tally and the northern province of Thai Nguyen added another 152,485 cases, the Ministry of Health said. Vietnam records around 2,000 new Covid-19 cases a day on average over the past week, the ministry added. Heavy rains drown Hanoi streets, block traffic
A tropical depression that used to be Storm Mulan in fact brought heavy rain to the capital since morning, and it got heavier as the day went on. Then, between midnight and 6 a.m. Friday, Hoang Mai District recorded 340 mm of rain, Nam Tu Liem recorded 190 mm, Bac Tu Liem recorded 250 mm, Cau Giay and Thanh Xuan recorded 230 mm, and Hoan Kiem and Ba Dinh recorded 170 mm. In Cau Giay District, many streets were inundated, the worst affected being Phan Van Truong Street, where some places had over 30 cm of water, paralyzing traffic. Hoa Bang, Duong Dinh Nghe, Tran Binh, Ho Tung Mau, Trung Kinh, and Pham Hung were under 20 cm of water. Nguyen Loan, who lives on Nguyen Khang Street and works on Duy Tan Street, said she was stuck on Trung Kinh Street for over 20 minutes. With the current trading band of +/-3 percent, the ceiling rate applicable to commercial banks during the day is 23,857 VND/USD and the floor rate 22,468 VND/USD. The opening-hour rates at many commercial banks increased. At 8:30 am, BIDV listed the buying rate at 23,250 VND/USD and the selling rate at 23,530 VND/USD, both up 5 VND from the end of August 10. Fuel prices were reduced in the latest review on August 11 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance, the fifth consecutive time and the fourth significant drop. Diesel fetched 22,908 VND per litre, a decline of 1,000 VND; and kerosene, 23,320 VND per litre, down 1,213 VND. The price of Mazut 180CST 3.5S remains unchanged at no more than 16,548 VND per kg. The two ministries also determined to extract 350 – 750 VND per litre from fuel prices for the petrol price stabilisation fund.
