Nearly 500 veteran and amateur singers from southern provinces took part in a singing contest featuring traditional songs native to southern Viet Nam recently. The Vong Co (Nostalgic Tunes) Golden Bell Contest event, organised by HCM City Television and its partners, aims to encourage young people to learn vong co, an art form that is part of cai luong (reformed opera) theatre. "Vong co is a set of sad and languorous tunes depicting the thoughts, dreams and laments of local farmers in the old days. The music is part of the country's spirit," said Tran Thi Nhu Huynh, a resident of Ca Mau Province, who is one of the contest's 10 semi-finalists. Civil servant by day and practitioner of traditional spiritual possession rituals when the mood takes her, Nguyen Thi Hoa is clad in a richly embroidered red robe as she performs a Len Dong ceremony at a private Hanoi temple. "I have no idea what I've been doing," Hoa told AFP after the five-hour performance, which involved at least 15 costume changes. "I could not believe I had smoked like a chimney and drunk like a fish," the normally teetotal 52-year-old said. "Could you tell me what I told you to do?" Hoa, who is not a professional Len Dong shaman and only undertakes the rituals when the spirits move her, asked friends who had watched the entire performance. Len Dong, which uses musical invocations to lure spirits to possess mediums and communicate with others, has been performed in Vietnam for centuries. … [Read more...] about Len Dong: an ancient shaman dance for modern Vietnam?

The original Bát Dật dance was performed by 64 dancers, divided into 8 rows. After a long time in oblivion, the dance is revitalized thanks to the efforts of the elder artists. 73-year-old Do Thi Thinh is teaching dance techniques to local youths. She said: "I began dancing at the age of 14. Now, when the dance has become popular again, we are all getting older. 2 elder villagers have been engaged in teaching. But one died. Very few villagers can dance Bát Dật". Thinh said a dance performance consists of many parts and that it takes at least 2 months of rehearsal before a performance goes public. Bát Dật dancers practice very hard. Thinh said: "A Bát Dật dance is performed in 4 rows, involving 32 dancers, whose number is now often reduced to 16.
