Products recalled from U.S. hit record high By Thu Nguyet - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC - The number of Vietnamese children’s product recalls hit a record high last year as local exporters violated the U.S. goods safety regulations, according to a commissioner of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Jeffrey G. Hilsgen, director of CPSC Asia-Pacific, said there were 18 Vietnamese children’s product lines recalled in the U.S. last year. As of August 4 this year, there had been seven cases compared to an average of 8-9 cases in previous years. The major recalled products include beds with unsafe components and apparels with drawstrings or high lead content. There were 65 such product recalls in the U.S., among which 47 originated from China, in the period between October 2010 and March 2011. These products have violated the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, or CPSIA. New regulations set on exports to U.S. Hoang Phi By Hoang Phi - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – Children’s products exported to the U.S. after next year’s February 8 will have to attach more specific technical files under the new standards set by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Details about chemicals, designs, and production processes have to be given in such files, under the new requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, said Joseph P. Mohorovic, vice president of Intertek, a global group on testing. The U.S. importers can accept technical files supplied by foreign producers, provided that they have been verified by an independent laboratory appointed by the U.S. commission, Mohorovic said at a workshop held by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Vietnam on Wednesday. Intertek adds new testing laboratory in Hanoi Hoang Phi By Phi Tuan - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – The UK-based Intertek has just opened a new apparel/textiles testing laboratory in Hanoi to support the growing textile and garment industry in northern Vietnam. The new lab performs textile testing for dimensional stability, colorfastness and seam strength, among others. The lab also supports full testing capability meeting U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) requirements. Thanh Nam Nguyen, a senior executive of the company, said that the Hanoi apparel testing laboratory is the most recent addition to Intertek’s global network of 45 textile and footwear laboratories worldwide.
