Police in Dak Lak, a province in Vietnam's Central Highlands, have detained and levied charges against 28 local residents accused of destroying over 380 hectares of forest in a local commune. The suspects were taken into custody following an investigation which began on April 12 into the largest-ever case of deforestation in Dak Lak, local police announced on Sunday. All 28 suspects have been charged with 'forest destruction' under the Vietnamese Penal Code, and the provincial procuracy has ratified the arrest warrants and prosecutions against them. They were found to have been involved in deforestation activities in different areas of Ya To Mot Commune in the province’s Ea Sup District, with an aim to illegally occupy forest land, police said. Police in Ho Chi Minh City are investigating a case where a woman allegedly murdered her own eighth-month baby before attempting to commit suicide at their rented house on Sunday. Officers in Hoc Mon District confirmed on Sunday evening they were investigating the reason behind the death of a baby girl. Preliminary information showed that a 36-year-old woman named N. and her eighth-month-old daughter were found lying motionless at a tenanted house in Trung Chanh Commune, Hoc Mon District on the morning of the same day. The baby girl had already died, while N. was still alive and rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Additional 1,179 Covid-19 infections announced on Monday
An additional 1,179 new Covid-19 infections were confirmed on Monday, raising the national tally to over 10.71 million, according to the Ministry of Health. According to the ministry's report, most of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 33 out of 63 localities in the country with some localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (332), Vinh Phuc (75), Quang Tri (72), Yen Bai (60), and Quang Ninh (56). As of Monday evening, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to over 10.71 million. The country now stands 12th among 227 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections. The Saudi government's Directorate General of Passports issued the travel ban on Saturday after it observed a consistent increase in the number of daily Covid-19 cases in the previous weeks. On Saturday, the Saudi Ministry of Health announced 414 new infections of Covid, with the weekly figures seeing a five-fold increase compared to those seen through March and April.
