Coast guard at the border

Delegates and owners of trawlers learnt about regulations and legal procedures for fishing areas according to laws of Vietnam and ASEAN member states. The work was expected to raise public awareness of fishing regulations, stressing the aim of ending violations in foreign waters. Reportedly, local owners of trawlers signed a document to commit to not fishing in foreign waters as well as to join hands with functional forces to conduct legal fishing in Vietnam’s waters and strictly safeguard the national sovereignty over sea and islands. The Vietnamese delegation was welcomed by General Mao Vibol, Deputy Director of the General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs of Cambodia at the airport. The same day, the Vietnamese deputy defense minister had a bilateral meeting with heads of Cambodian and Singaporean delegations ahead of ADSOM and ADSOM+. Chau is accompanying Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue on his official visit to Laos from May 15 – 17. Affirming the growing bilateral relations, the officials agreed to focus their attention on organizing activities marking the two countries’ Solidarity and Friendship Year 2022, the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic ties, and the 45th year of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation. The two are scheduled to visit each other’s country this year. Vietnam and Laos also plan to hold a conference on building a shared border of peace and friendship in 2022. Previously, Chau met leaders of the associations of the Vietnamese people in Laos and Thailand and the Vietnamese business association in Laos to get to know their wishes and opinions after being severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic over the last two years. The N.A. Committees for Foreign Affairs have closely partnered together both bilaterally and multilaterally under their jurisdiction, the officials said. The Vietnam-Laos relations have become more practical, notably with a workshop presided over by the N.A. Chairmen which shared experience in policy mechanisms for socio-economic recovery and development in the post-pandemic period. The two countries need to facilitate economic, trade and investment relations to match their potential and turn them into an important pillar in bilateral ties, they underlined.
