(Cinet)- Marking 20 years of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam (1992-2012), famous South Korean opera singer Sumi Jo, a Grammy Award winner will perform in the ‘We are Friends’ concert in Hanoi on October 27-28. Jo was born Jo Su-gyeong in Seoul in South Korea. She was introduced to music early by her mother who was an amateur singer and pianist. In 1976, Jo entered the Sun Hwa Arts School from where she graduated in 1980 with diplomas in voice and piano. She continued her music studies at the Seoul National University from 1980–1983. In 1990, she made her European opera debut as Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto at the Chicago Lyric Opera and then took this role to the Metropolitan Opera for next 10 years. Shaolin Kungfu masters promote cultural exchange in Chicago
On Dec. 10, Shaolin Kungfu is a precious part of Chinese culture and Shaolin Kungfu masters are helping promote cultural exchange between China and other countries, and ultimately help enrich people's life all over the world, a distinguished Shaolin Kungfu master said here on Thursday. As the chief coach of Shaolin Warrior Monks, Shi Yanlu arrived in Chicago Monday, along with a group of other 13 Kungfu monks from ShaolinTemple in China. Invited by Suncastv, a Chicago-based IPTV provider, the Shaolin delegation will present Shaolin martial arts performance at Paramount Theatre of Aurora, a suburb of Chicago on Saturday. Asian communities celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in Chicago
To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Jesse White, Illinois Secretary of State, hosted a reception on Thursday at James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago in the United States. Dressed in colorful ethnic clothing, hundreds of Asian Pacific Americans of various ethnic backgrounds such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indian, participated the reception. Jesse White said during the reception: "Today and throughout the month of May, we recognize and commend Asian-Americans who have made a difference in other communities. Through their passions, visions and hard work, they have helped make their dreams and the dreams of others become realities."
