Samsung concludes third training course for Vietnamese consultants Samsung Vietnam and the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) rounded off its third training course for Vietnamese consultants in the supporting industry with a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on October 19. Speaking at the ceremony, Truong Thanh Hoai, Director of the MoIT’s Heavy Industries Department, pointed out some of the industry’s weak points in terms of competitiveness and spare parts materials, attributing them to the limited management and investment capacity of local companies. He said the Government and other relevant ministries have issued many policies to support the growth of the sector, adding that Samsung’s courses are an important part of such efforts. Viet Nam News Khánh Dương An unpalatable fact about working overtime in Việt Nam was revealed in a survey conducted by Institute for Workers and Trade Unions not long ago. Vietnamese textile labourers work on average 47 to 60 extra hours per month, far exceeding the 30 overtime hours regulated in law. Looking to the calendar year, the overtime shifts one has to do each year might reach up to 500, even 600 hours. But the wages revealed in the survey were a bigger disappointment. Average overtime pay for every labourer is estimated at not higher than VNĐ1.34 million (US$58) per month. This accounts for only 22.4 per cent of their total monthly income. According to the current Labour Code which came into force in 2012, the number of overtime hours must not exceed 50 per cent of normal working hours in a day. Vinatex completes 65% of yearly revenue target Viet Nam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) has completed 65 per cent of the yearly target set for total revenues with its eight-month result (excluding VAT) reaching over VND31.45 trillion (US$1.34 billion). This figure also represented a rise of 7 per cent against the same period last year, the textile group reported in a filing to the Ministry of Planning and Investment. In August alone, it earned VND4.48 trillion in revenue, down 5 per cent year-on-year, of which turnover of the parent company and subsidiaries with its holdings of over 50 per cent capital reached almost VND1.74 trillion.
