Nha Trang to suspend scuba tours to protect coral reefs
The move came in the light of the shrinking coral reef ecosystem in Mun Island Marine Protected Area in Nha Trang Bay. Provincial authorities ordered relevant agencies to strictly protect Mun Island area and cooperate with experts and research institutes to fully assess the current status of coral reefs. Though Nha Trang beaches are up for tourism development, marine ecosystem protection must be a priority, authorities said. Nha Trang Bay is nearly 250 square kilometers and is one of 16 marine protected areas in Vietnam. In recent years, it has grown famous for scuba diving tours exploring its coral reefs and marine ecosystem. Three Russian Navy ships complete Vietnam tour
Destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov, corvette Gremyashchy and oil tanker Pechenga led by Colonel Alexey Anciferov had docked at the strategic naval base at Cam Ranh Bay in Khanh Hoa from June 25 to 28. During their stay, the Russian officers and crew members played sports with their Vietnamese counterparts at the High Command of Region 4 of the Vietnam People's Navy, which oversees the waters off the central coast. They also visited several cultural and historic sites in Nha Trang. Destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov belongs to the Soviet designation Project 1155 Fregat and Russian designation Project 11551 Fregat-M, which are a series of anti-submarine guided-missile destroyers built for the Soviet Navy, seven of which are currently in service with the Russian Navy. Hanoi welcomes over 8.6 million visitors in first half of 2022
The result comes from the fact that Hanoi authorities made good use of opportunities such as the 31st Southeast Asian Games. Hanoi’s tourism sector welcomed 8.61 million visitors in the first six months of 2022, an increase of nearly three times year-on-year, according to the municipal Department of Tourism. The arrival number is estimated to hit 211 thousand while that of domestic tourists is around 8.4 million visitors. Total revenue from tourism is estimated at VND25.2 trillion (around US$1 billion), up more than three times compared to the same period in 2021. The average room occupancy in hotels rated with stars is estimated at more than 30%, an increase of 6.11% year on year. In June alone, room occupancy is around 42.9%, down 2.3% compared to May but up 17.2% over the same period in 2021. Workshop seeks to promote responsible tourism and wildlife conservation
The event, which was organized by World Wide Fund for Nature in Vietnam in coordination with Hanoi’s Department of Tourism and Hanoi Tourism Association, aims to provide knowledge about responsible tourism and wildlife conservation for 150 tour guides and travel operators. Vietnam currently has 33 national parks, 57 nature reserves, 13 habitat conservation areas, 53 landscape protection zones and 9 biosphere reserves. Participants were provided with information that was expected to help identify risks related to brokering and trading wildlife products. Some good models and lessons on responsible tourism associated with nature and wildlife preservation in the world and Vietnam were also shared at the workshop, thereby helping to change travelers’ behaviors and refrain from buying or selling products from endangered species.
