The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) national carrier Emirates (EK) has been accused of violating Vietnam’s civil aviation regulations on multiple counts and was fined to VND15 million ($652) by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV). Emirates was fined for lacking a non-refundable advance compensation policy The results of the CAAV’s recent inspection of Emirates’ operation in Vietnam uncovered several shortcomings and faults in the company’s operation and provision of air services in Vietnam. The penalty was issued by the CAAV over charges of EK’s unpublished non-refundable advance compensation policy, which it found to be a breach of conduct under the local law. Accordingly, Emirates does not apply such a policy, thus its website and booking agencies do not have this information available for the public, while Article 4(3) of Circular No.14/2015/TT-BGTVT explicitly requires air transport companies to have such a policy and make … [Read more...] about Five star Emirates fined for VND15 million by Vietnam authorities

The 24-hour strike by Ryanair pilots in Europe means the Irish airline is scrapping 400 of 2,400 scheduled flights on Friday AFP/Odd ANDERSEN The Irish no-frills airline was forced to scrap some 400 out of 2,400 scheduled European flights as pilots in Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands walked off the job. Around 55,000 passengers were affected by the strikes, said Ryanair, which has offered customers refunds or the option of rebooking their journeys. Ryanair has slammed the stoppages as "unnecessary" but pilots counter that the carrier has refused to engage in meaningful dialogue about collective labour agreements since it began recognising unions in December 2017. Germany was worst hit by the industrial action, with 250 flights scrapped at 10 airports. The country's powerful Cockpit union said it had called on Ryanair's roughly 480 Germany-based pilots to walk out from 3.01am (0101 GMT) until 2.59am on Saturday. "Ryanair said there is not one extra cent for … [Read more...] about European pilots hit Ryanair with biggest strike yet
British Airways (BA) said it would take steps to ensure there was no repeat of a computer system failure that stranded 75,000 passengers over a holiday weekend and turned into a public relations disaster. BA had been forced to cancel all its flights from Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, and Gatwick on Saturday after a power supply problem disrupted its operations worldwide and also hit its call centers and website. The airline was returning to normal on Monday, planning to run more than 95 percent of flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick, with only a handful of short-haul flights canceled. BA Chief Executive Alex Cruz said the root of the problem, which also affected passengers trying to fly into Britain, had been a power surge on Saturday morning which hit BA's flight, baggage and communication systems. It was so strong it also rendered the back-up systems ineffective, he said. "Once the disruption is over, we will carry out an exhaustive investigation into what caused this … [Read more...] about British Airways vows ‘never again’ after costly IT collapse
Nguyen Xuan Duc booked a flight with Jetstar Pacific to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi one morning earlier this month. He received a message from the carrier the night before notifying that the flight would be delayed until the afternoon. Since he could not find any other options, he had to accept the delay, which meant canceling some of his business plans. He received no compensation because, technically, he was informed by the airline. Travelers in Vietnam have long come to terms with the fact that flight delays and cancellations can happen daily. But with the problem showing no sign of getting better, many are now demanding that at least carriers compensate them fairly for all the expenses incurred and the opportunities missed. Some even hope that substantial compensations may eventually scare airlines into improving on-time performance. Currently the numbers do not make any local carriers look good. Statistics from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam listed 639 … [Read more...] about ‘Your flight has been delayed’: Do Vietnamese airlines play fair with passengers?
