Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Dinh Viet Thang, said it would take at least two more years for airlines to open direct routes to the US due to various issues. The US is a large market with huge potential. However, Thang said they would have to meet many requirements to open direct routes. Vietnam and the US signed an agreement in 2003 in which the two countries could launch one direct flight a day or go through two or three transit points via a third country (except Japan) in order to reach the US. In early 2019 Vietnam was officially granted Category 1 status by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Vietnam is already negotiating with other countries and territories for assistance, said Dinh Viet Thang, director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) at a conference on Wednesday. Taiwan and South Korea have agreed to grant Vietnamese airlines fifth freedom traffic rights, which would allow them to carry passengers and goods from their territory to a third country. The CAAV has been recognized by the U.S. as achieving a Category 1 rating, which means it meets the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standards for personnel licensing, operations and airworthiness. Technical capability is still an issue for Vietnamese carriers since to operate flights to the U.S. they would need long-haul aircraft. They would need to meet the ETOPS-180 standard for operating twin-engine aircraft across oceans, which requires them to fly for 180 minutes on just one engine. At a symposium of the second Vietnam Travel and Tourism Summit 2019 held in Hanoi on Monday, many experts and business executives in the field listed some reasons why foreign tourists are not opening their wallets in Vietnam. According to Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Ngo Hoai Chung, the sector has witnessed a rapid growth in the number of international holidaymakers, however, they spend less in Vietnam compared to other Southeast Asian countries due to the shortage of tourism products and services.
