Five VN companies in Asia Pacific’s top 500 retailers Five Vietnamese companies have been listed among Asia Pacific’s top 500 retailers in 2014, according to the Retail Asia Publishing Pte and the Euromonitor (Asia) Pte Ltd. They are Saigon Union of Trading Cooperatives, with last year’s retail turnover of US$1,105 million, Big C chain under Casino Guichard Perrachon SA (US$534 million), Nguyen Kim Trading JSC (US$490 million), Saigon Jewelry Co.Ltd (US$487 million) and Mobile World JSC (US$395 million). Binh Thanh Police nab murder suspect The Binh Thanh District Police today arrested Vu Duc Tai, 18, who is suspected of killing two people at a coffee shop on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Road last night. According to initial investigations, Tai met with his former girlfriend Nguyen Anh Thu, 19, and new girlfriend Tran, at the coffee shop in District 13, Binh Thanh District, HCM City. Soon, Thu and Tran got into a fight and Tai stabbed two of Thu's friends, Nguyen Binh An, 17, and Pham Thai Minh, 19, both from Binh Thach District. Although An and Minh were immediately taken to Gia Dinh Hospital, they died of serious injuries and loss of blood. Tai was caught early this morning from Mien Dong Coach Station when he was trying to get away. Highways need inspection: Minister Damage to the surfaces of the Ho Chi Minh Highway and National Highway 1 has prompted Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang to order the strict inspection of these highways. Conference highlights media’s role in national leadership, management The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and the Academy of Journalism and Communications (AJC) jointly organised a conference on the role of information provided by the media in the country’s leadership and management during the process of renovation and international integration. US official upbeat on business climate A senior official from the US Government's development finance agency has expressed optimism about the investment climate in Viet Nam. "US businesses, because of the economic slowdown, are looking for opportunities internationally, and as they look for those opportunities, particularly in Asia, I think Viet Nam is a very attractive place for that investment," said Dr Lawrence Spinelli, public affairs director at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). "That is not just because of the size of the country or the market, which is significant, but also because of the regional opportunities that are provided for any US investors coming to Viet Nam."
