This is an activity in the framework of the initiative Gender Stereotype Circle Breaking – one of the four initiatives to be sponsored by the Asian Gender Trainers’ Network Programme. During the two days of training, through experiential games, role-playing, and debating methods, the teachers had the chance to gain knowledge about gender concepts, gender equality, norms, stereotypes, and domestic and international legal frameworks. In particular, teachers at Ban Lau Primary School and Muong Khuong Primary School No.1 participated in training units to find gender stereotypes and norms in textbooks and teaching activities, thereby suggesting appropriate solutions to students. “I will pose questions in my lessons so that the students can realise that today's females and males have equal rights to choose a career which suits their desires and abilities,” said Nguyen Thi Thua, a teacher at Ban Lau Primary School. (Photo: SGGP) Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son reported that with the implementation of Resolution No. 77/NQ-CP on piloting renovation of operation mechanism for public higher education institutions from 2014-2017, higher educational facilities have made great strides in opening up resources and the capacity of training institutions has been maximized. Currently, 142/232 universities are eligible for autonomy according to the provisions of the revised Higher Education Law. Thanks to this autonomy mechanism, piloting universities can attract more capable lecturers and researchers, with the percentage of those owning a doctorate degree reaching 31 percent in 2021. Vietnamese fishermen move to mountain to make ends meet in Mekong Delta
About ten years ago, when rivers in Vietnam's Mekong Delta started to run low on fish and shrimp, dozens of local households left the region for the Central Highlands in an attempt to eke out a living by fishing in reservoirs. The fishing skills of the Mekong Delta fishermen were easily adapted to the Se San Reservoir in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, where 34 households, mostly from An Giang and Hau Giang Provinces in the Mekong Delta, have been coping well with the uncertainty of their new lives in the mountains. Fishing on a mountain Dang Van Thuoc, a 40-year-old man, was one of the first Mekong Delta fishers to leave southern Vietnam for Kon Tum. He currently earns a living fishing in the Se San Reservoir. SANSE prepares youth for sustainable development
Can you give an overview of SANSE, its goals, and past results? Nguyen Trang Linh, head of development at SANSE, founded in 2016 by students at the United Nations International School in Hanoi SANSE’s mission is to promote the sustainable growth of impoverished, geographically challenged, and agriculturally dependent regions in Vietnam; foster an understanding and connection between urban and rural communities; and promote the local educational systems and other learning opportunities as a tool to assist the sustainable growth of rural regions in Vietnam. We’re currently working to achieve these goals in the ethnic Tay village of Ban Lien in Lao Cai by providing infrastructure and education.
