(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - A total of 1,319 new COVID-19 cases, all community infections, were confirmed over the past 24 hours to 4pm May 22, according to the Ministry of Health. Hanoi remained the largest coronavirus hotspot with 347 cases, followed by Bac Ninh (138) and Vinh Phuc (90). The national tally now reached 10,708,887. Over 8,940 COVID-19 patients were given the all clear on the day, bringing the number of recoveries so far to 9,402,046. A total of 211 patients are currently given breathing support. No deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, keeping the fatalities at 43,075.. SEA Games 31: Vietnamese finswimming team win 10 golds in total
On May 22, the last day of competition, Vietnamese finswimmers set four new SEA Games record and pocketed five gold medals. Veteran Nguyen Thanh Loc finished first in the men's 50m surface, setting a record of 15.60 sec. Indonesian Wahyu Anggoro Tamtomo was second (15.83 sec) and Thai Khet Chamnanwat third (16.12 sec). Pham Thi Kim Thuong overcame all other rivals in the women's 800m surface with her personal best of 7:19.18 min. Indonesian Andhini Muthia Maulida (7:28.67 min) and her compatriot Katherina Eda Rahayu (7:31.72 min) were second and third, respectively. Microplastics can go directly into the lungs during daily activities. A group of biologists and researchers from the University of Science and Education under Đà Nẵng University has reported their independent survey and research on microplastic pollution in the central hub, the first of its kind in central Việt Nam. Common types of microplastics in the air that had been collected in a four-month survey in six districts of Đà Nẵng City between 2021-22 were only observed by microscope with sizes from 850 to 900 micrometres. Textile and footwear exports to the US, the EU, and Southeast Asia have grown strongly In the first four months of 2022, the two major industries that contributed to Vietnam’s total export value have recovered faster than expected in terms of production and export performance. Their combined export value surpassed $19 billion, of which the textile sector counted nearly $11.9 billion, up 22.5 per cent on-year, and that of footwear reached $7.32 billion, up 12.4 per cent on-year. Vietnam’s textile export value to the US rose sharply to $6.6 billion, up 26.8 per cent on-year, corresponding to an increase of $1.26 billion. With this result, the US market contributed up to 59 per cent to the export value of this product. In 2022, the leather and footwear industry is set to reach an export target of $23-25 billion, up 10-15 per cent on-year while the textile sector aims to post $42.5-43 billion in total export value. Vietnamese weightlifters set six new records at SEA Games 31
On the last day of competition on May 22, Vietnam earned two silvers in the men’s 89kg and over 89kg categories and a bronze in the women’s over 71kg. Pham Thi Hong Thanh set three new records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift in the women's 64kg event held a day earlier. Thanh lifted a total of 230kg – 104kg in snatch, and 126kg in clean and jerk, 6kg and 2kg higher than the old records, respectively. Her total lifting was far higher than the previous SEA Games record of 214 kg. Despite an injury, Hoang Thi Duyen, from Giay ethnic minority group, managed to break two SEA Games records in snatch and total lift in the women’s 59kg category. In the final of the men's 800m freestyle, Hoàng had no difficulty finishing first to take the gold after clocking 07:57.65. Then, he won another in the men’s 200m butterfly. In the 800m freestyle Hoàng left runner-up Nguyễn Hữu Kim Sơn behind, who finished with a time of 08:04.23. The bronze medal went to Hoe Yean Khiew of Malaysia with a time of 08:06.71. In the Asian Games in 2018, Hoàng also won a bronze medal in this category. In the men's 200m butterfly event, Hoàng faced fierce competition from Thai swimmer Wongcharoen Navaphat.
