Wanted: compelling books for teen readers (07-04-2006) Teen readers are in dire need of books as only 100 titles in-tended for them come out each year, and many of these books do not satisfy modern tastes, industry insiders say. Comic books, on the other hand, are plentiful: The Viet Nam Writers Association says 800,000 copies roll off the presses every week. Only two publishers, Kim Dong Publisher and Tre (Youth) Publishing House, print teen-oriented literature. Since 2002, Kim Dong Publishers have published two teen titles a week, but the 2,000 to 3,000 copies printed each week cannot satisfy demand, Cao Xuan Son, head of Kim Dong Publisher’s HCM City branch, said. Availability, however, is only one problem; the content of teen literature fails to interest readers. "We need more books to depict our thoughts and feelings," teenager Lan Chi said. The topics and writing style of books like Vo Phi Hung’s Song Sot Via He (Surviving Street Life) and Nguyen Ngoc Thuan’s … [Read more...] about Wanted: compelling books for teen readers

Summer reading for youth lacks Vietnamese titles
Summer reading for youth lacks Vietnamese titles (26-05-2007) HCM CITY — Local publishers will print 17 new books for young readers to consume on their summer holidays, but people are concerned about the availability of authentic Vietnamese material, as 15 of the titles are foreign. Local publishers and readers are concerned about the ratio. Explaining the shortage of Vietnamese stories for children, Nguyen Quang Vinh, director of the Kim Dong Publishing House, said his company did not receive good ideas from authors that know how to appeal to children’s imagination. "We hope to receive creative ideas for characters and stories that appeal to Viet Nam’s children and youth and give them an appreciation for stories about Vietnamese life," Vinh said. Toi La Be To (I’m Be To) by well-known writer Nguyen Nhat Anh and Sieu Nhan Do (A Red Superman) by Nguyen Thi Hong An are the two new Vietnamese stories published to entertain the country’s young readers over … [Read more...] about Summer reading for youth lacks Vietnamese titles

Young writer runs website to review worthy books for Vietnamese readers
A local writer whose fantasy novel has made her name in Vietnam over the past 10 years has successfully run a website to review both Vietnamese and foreign academic tomes and popular best-sellers. Thao Duong, 26, has operated her book review site, “Reading Café” at http://english.cinet.vn/https://readingcafe.wordpress.com, for the past six years. “Worthy books are profuse, but who introduces such books to young readers? Academic books and expert articles are generally limited to a certain community, while a large number of average readers, particularly those under 30, are keen on reading such works,” Duong explained the reason for launching the nonprofit website in 2009. Duong, better known as Chiem Phong, and four of her friends have listed and reviewed the Vietnamese translations of academic tomes which are written by authors who have claimed Nobel and Goncourt prizes and published in Vietnam. Other highlights include classic world masterpieces such … [Read more...] about Young writer runs website to review worthy books for Vietnamese readers
