Local Lowdown (01-10-2008) New helmet campaign launched HA NOI — A campaign, themed Wear a Helmet Everytime, Everywhere, has been launched. The campaign features advertisements of famous artists wearing helmets including Chinese actress Michelle Yeoh, Miss Viet Nam 2006 Mai Phuong Thuy and Miss Universe Thuy Lam, singers Lam Truong, Hien Thuc, Doan Trang and Cao Thai Son, and models Thuy Hanh and Tommy Tran. The campaign was organised by the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, the National Traffic Safety Committee and the Viet Nam Helmet Wearing Coalition. Indonesia’s incoming president began his political ascent as a mayor in a system of local elections. The parties of the candidate he beat in July will try to change the law next week to prevent that happening again. Lawmakers will vote Sept. 25 on a bill to revise a 2004 law on regional government that enabled direct elections. The draft, seen by Bloomberg News, would turn the clock back to a system of local assemblies choosing regional leaders that was created after the downfall of the late dictator Suharto. The vote in parliament, where parties on the losing side of the presidential ballot now hold 75 percent of seats, poses a test for the world’s third-largest democracy and President-elect Joko Widodo, who got his start as mayor of the city of Solo. Mermaid photo hoax hits social network The director of central Quang Nam Province's Depart-ment of Information and Communication Pham Hong Quang on Sunday dismissed a rumour that local residents found a mermaid on the coast. Earlier, a local website publicised a post with a photo showing a "mermaid", adding that she was taken to a hospital and American experts would come for further analysis. However, it turns out that the photo is part of mermaid-themed wedding photos. The website stole the photo and made up the story. In Viet Nam, wedding photos are taken months before the actual ceremony and shown at the reception. At the wedding, they have a slideshow or video showing the couple's photos. More couples are seeking different or even unusual ways to capture their happy moments through wedding photos.
