At a beach in Phu Quoc (Photo: VNA) Kien Giang (VNA) – The number of visitor s to the resort island of Phu Quoc, the southern province of Kien Giang, surge d strongly in June, with around 140 flights and over 40 ferries and boats carrying tens of thousands of tourists to and from the island each day. Phu Quoc has more than 700 accommodation facilities with over 24,000 rooms, but with the large number of travellers, many are filled to capacity. Phu Quoc authorities said the island received an estimated 1.4 million visitors in the first six months of this year, including 46,200 foreigners. Revenues from tourism shot up 46 percent year on year to top 2.84 trillion VND (122 million USD). The island is home to 284 investment projects in tourism development, covering 9,619 hectares of land, with total investment capital of nearly 352.2 trillion VND. According to the city’s Department of Tourism , the event aims to revive tourism activities after a period of crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vietnam is closely behind India that is leading the way in the inaugural APAC Traveller Confidence Index survey by the US-based online travel agency that polled 11,000 travellers across 11 countries and territories in the region from April to May. The city's total tourism revenue in the first half of 2022 amounted to approximately 25.2 trillion VND (1.08 billion USD), more than three times higher than the figure in the first six months of 2021. Local hotels rated 1-5 stars recorded an average occupation rate of over 30% during the period, up 6.11% year-on-year. The capital city, home to 24 recognised tourist destinations, is offering a series of enticing products to attract tourists given its reopening of the local tourism industry. The Soc Son District court sentenced Nguyen Van Cuong, 40, to 10 years in prison on Tuesday after finding him guilty of "robbery" and "arresting people illegally." On the same charges, the court sentenced Nguyen Tuan Anh, 21, to seven years, while two other defendants, Duong Van Quy, 27, and Duong Van Cuong, 28, received nine years each. According to the verdict, around 0:22 a.m. on Jul. 11, 2018, Dao Cong Thanh, 56, and four others took two boats to a section of the Cau River in Trung Gia Commune of Soc Son District to mine sand illegally. The boats were anchored around 30m from the bank, next to a farm owned by Cuong. On learning about the sand mining, he mobilized Anh, Quy and Cuong to join him in chasing the sand thieves away. Cuong’s group took a boat to where the thieves were mining sand and used iron pipes to threaten them.
