For the first time in the history of the Games, each nation that took part was led by both a female and male athlete, as part of the International Olympic Committee's efforts to push gender equality. Swimmer Hoang and runner Lan were bestowed the honour by the Vietnam Olympic Committee. Amid the pomp and circumstances of the opening ceremony, the pair was followed by the Vietnamese team. Vietnamese athletes start competing at Tokyo 2020 Olympics
Archer Do Thi Anh Nguyet was the first Vietnamese athlete to compete at the Games from 9am (local time). This is also the first time that Vietnamese archers have qualified for the global sporting event. The 20-year-old archer is competing against 63 rivals in the women’s recurve bow category, which is her forte. On the same day, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu, another archer of Vietnam, will also start his journey in the men’s recurve category. He will also confront 63 rivals in the event. If the total points of the two archers are among the top 16, they will advance to the next round of the mixed team category slated for July 24. In addition, their points are counted at the women’s and men’s singles. The Vietnamese delegation to the Tokyo Olympics comprises 43 members, including 18 athletes. The two archers, Nguyễn Hoàng Phi Vũ and Đỗ Thị Ánh Nguyệt, will be first up with their first competitions at the Tokyo International Forum tomorrow, just hours before the opening ceremony. Rowing duo, Lường Thị Thảo and Đinh Thị Hảo will compete at the Sea Forest Waterway on the same day. "Waves and wind are stronger here than in our training centre at home. It is our first training so we are just getting familiar with the water and the route," said rower Thảo. VTV to screen Tokyo Olympics for free
The Việt Nam Television (VTV) has won the television rights to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. AFP/VNA Photo HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam Television (VTV) and its partners have won the television rights to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for Việt Nam, VTV has announced. VTV said it was working with its partners in preparation for screening the games and would make viewing schedules available as soon as possible. During the past three years, VTV has negotiated with the Tokyo Olympics organisers to buy the television rights for Việt Nam. Initially, the International Olympics Committee asked for more than 20 times what the 2016 Brazilian Olympics’ television rights cost. However, on July 21, VTV managed to successfully negotiate a deal that would allow them to screen the Tokyo Olympics. Nguyệt, however, will progress to the next round to compete against the host nation’s Hayakawa Ren. This year marks the first time that the 20-year-old archer has competed in the Olympics. These stamp sets were designed and issued by the Fukushima Post in collaboration with the city's administration. Each set includes five stamps featuring the flags of Vietnam and Fukushima as well as famous landscapes and typical flowers and fruits such as Cau Pagoda - built by Japan in the early 17th century in Vietnam’s Hoi An ancient city, lotus - the national flower of Vietnam, and peach - a famous fruit of Fukushima prefecture.
