Illustrative image (Source: VNA) HCM City (VNA) – The threat of macro-economic headwinds dragging global growth should be the impetus ASEAN needs to push its reform agenda harder in 2019, according to a report recently released by the HSBC Group. Amid improving intra-regional flows to offset global trade slowdown, ASEAN economies could partly offset any trade downturns if supply chain diversion to Southeast Asia materialises, but increasing the ease in which goods and services flow across ASEAN will make the transition more widespread, it said. However, more needs to be done to smooth the flow of goods and services across the bloc. This includes rolling out the ASEAN one-stop shop mechanism to all ASEAN countries, standardising the cost and time of customs clearance across Southeast Asia and enabling more free movement of professionals across the region. On the other hand, foreign direct investment into Southeast Asia has softened post-global financial … [Read more...] about HSBC: Global headwinds create impetus for ASEAN integration

HCM CITY—Building an East Asian Community is a prerequisite to enhance Asian standing in the world arena, said Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem. Khieêm was speaking at a discussion session titled ‘Countdown to Regional Integration' on ways to streamline local integration in order to build up a powerful Asian economic block. The roadmap to remove tariff barriers was already in place, Khiem said, and once completed, the free trade area in East Asia would be the largest in the world with a population of 2 billion and a combined GDP of around US$10 trillion. "The ASEAN countries are working closely with each other towards building the East Asian Community," he added, noting that establishing the ASEAN community by 2015 was a priority on its agenda. "It's a long-term process with ASEAN at the centre, and peace, stability, co-operation, development and common prosperity as objectives, and economic links as the main vehicle," he said, noting that during its ASEAN … [Read more...] about Trust, leadership vital in ASEAN integration
A cohesive regional community could be a boon for migrant workers, but it could also leave them unprotected The coming together of the ASEAN member states in a single economic community in 2015 is expected to provide a greater wealth of opportunities for growth across the region. But there is still a lot of misunderstanding about what this will mean for migration flows in the region and at the country level. People sometimes refer to a free movement of labor, as in Europe, but that prospect remains distant. As this new economic community emerges, there will be opportunity for the greater mobility of workers who move across national boundaries to fill skills shortages, increase their incomes and gain new experiences. However, discussions have primarily focused on labor mobility for skilled workers through Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs) that provide freedom of movement and rights to work across the region for professionals in eight fields - accountancy, engineering, … [Read more...] about How will ASEAN regional integration affect labor migration in Vietnam?
