ASEAN, Canada seek ways to foster partnership
Addressing the event, Assistant Foreign Minister and Head of SOM Canada Paul Thoppil affirmed that his country always attaches great importance to 45-year-ties with ASEAN, and underlined that ASEAN and the Southeast Asian region play a core role in the Indo-Pacific Strategy that Canada is going to announce. ASEAN defense ministers meet with Japanese, Chinese counterparts
At the informal meeting between defense ministers of ASEAN and Japan, Japanese Minister of Defense Kishi Nobuo affirmed that Japan supports ASEAN’s centrality in regional cooperation mechanisms. He suggested the two sides strengthen defense cooperation in the fields that are important to ASEAN, including improvement of maritime security, human resource quality, cyber security, and response to impacts of climate change on regional security. Head delegates of ASEAN highly appreciated Japan’s role in maintaining peace and stability in the region. They thanked Japan for providing vaccine and giving other support for ASEAN countries in the COVID-19 fight efforts. China’s drills on Vietnam’s Paracel Islands a sovereignty violation
Hang said that China's actions "have severely violated Vietnam's sovereignty over the islands, gone against the spirit of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, complicated the situation and is not beneficial for current negotiation processes between China and ASEAN for a Code of Conduct for the South China Sea and the maintenance of peace, stability and cooperation in the sea." The South China Sea is known as the East Sea in Vietnam. Hang was responding to questions about an announcement by the Hainan Department for Ocean Affairs on June 13 about a Chinese military drill on June 19 on a north-western area of the Paracel Islands. According to the latest report by HSBC, total FDI to ASEAN-6 (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines) has averaged nearly $127 billion per year since 2010, approximately three times more than the average over the previous decade – the average for 2000-09 was $41 billion. Similarly, net FDI – inbound minus outbound direct investment – has averaged nearly $54 billion a year since 2010, almost four times the average from the previous decade.
