Tradition of pack-horse races in northeast Vietnam Bac Ha District in the mountain province of Lao Cai in northeastern Vietnam is famous for its specialty food as well as its tradition of racing pack-horses. Participants in the horse-racing are the local farmers. Although they aren’t professional horsemen, they are experienced in the art and select good horses and care for them as they prepare for the races. Thao Seo Lenh, who has participated four times, said that any rider expecting to enter the races needs to choose the right horse that is good in both tilling and as a pack-horse. The best horses are of age five to eight with great height, tapering legs, white teeth, smooth backs and thick manes. Riders usually rest their horses for three to four days, isolate and feed them with nutritious paddy, corn and soybean before an upcoming race. Chinese watercolors for National Day The Chinese art club in HCMC on Tuesday opened a watercolor painting exhibition at the HCMC Association of Fine Arts to mark National Day on September 2. The exhibition features more than 70 pieces by 36 artists such as Truong Han Minh, Ly Tung Nien, Truong Lo and Ly Khac Nhu. When we mention watercolors, people think of flowers, bamboo, landscapes and birds. However, in this show, visitors can see another feature of the Chinese traditional painting genre. Portraits, daily life activities and social issues are depicted with Chinese ink, papyrus, bark paper, plastic, vellum or leather, fabric, wood and canvas. The show also expresses the connection of Chinese and Vietnamese artists. Guitarist Paco Renteria to perform in Vietnam Mexican guitarist Paco Renteria will be in Vietnam from September 22-27. He is scheduled to perform in Hanoi and Thai Nguyen and take part in an exchange at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. In 2010, he performed very successfully in Hue and Hanoi. He began to play guitar at the age of seven and graduated from the music school seven years later. Paco Renteria has risen to fame thanks to his new style of “Free Play” with 300 pieces of work. Ca tru artists offer free weekly shows Anyone who loves ca tru (ceremonial singing) – one of the most preserved Vietnamese traditional art forms and a piece of world cultural heritage – will be delighted to learn that the Ha Noi Ca Tru Club is launching free weekly performances, starting this Saturday. Located at 34 Hoang Cau Street, the weekly show will take place from 8.30pm until 10pm. Famous traditional instrumentalists will be there, including Ngoc Anh (flute), Thu Ha (36-stringed zither), Thanh Nam (drum), Ba Hai (three-stringed day) and Bach Van (singer). Minh Beo will be sentenced in December to 18 months in prison. Popular Vietnamese actor and comedian Hong Quang Minh, who goes by the stage name Minh Beo or Fat Minh, pleaded guilty on Wednesday at a court in California to child molesting charges. Minh was arrested on March 24 on charges of having oral sex with a 16-year-old boy and attempting to commit a lewd act upon a child under 14 years old. The second charge against Minh came from a meeting he had tried to arranged with a police officer who was acting as a 13-year-old boy. He has been held at Theo Lacy Jail in Orange County since March. During the 15-minute trial yesterday, Minh pleaded guilty to having sex with a 16-year-old boy and attempting to commit a sexual assault on a boy under 14 years old. He will be sentenced to 18 months in state prison in December and must register as a sex offender for life, said Orange County prosecutors.
