Farmers harvest clams in Bến Tre Province’s Bình Đại District. — VNA/VNS Photo Công Trí BẾN TRE — The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Bến Tre is expanding farming of some key fisheries products for both domestic consumption and exports. They include black tiger shrimps, white-legged shrimps, clams, river giant prawns, and tra fish. Nguyễn Minh Cảnh, deputy chairman of the province People’s Committee, said advanced breeding techniques would be used to increase yield, output and quality. They would also help adapt to climate change and protect the environment, he said. The province would develop linkages between small fisheries breeding establishments to create large breeding areas and also link them with businesses to ensure supply of inputs and outlets for their harvests, he said. Shrimp-rice fields grown to organic standards in Bạc Liêu Province. — VNA/VNS Photo Tuấn Kiệt BẠC LIÊU — The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Bạc Liêu is expanding the use of organic fertilisers in rice cultivation to improve farmer’s incomes and protect the environment. In the last winter-spring rice crop, the Phước Long District Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development launched a pilot programme for increasing the use of organic fertilisers and reducing the use of chemicals on a total area of 110ha, with 60 farmers involved. Phạm Văn Cầu, one of the farmers, said: “The prices of inputs, especially fertilisers, have shot up, and so the use of organic fertilisers helps farmers reduce costs while rice plants still have high yields and quality.” He grew 2ha of Đài Thơm 8, a speciality rice variety, and got nearly 10 tonnes per hectare, and earned more than VNĐ300 million (US$13,000), he said. The southernmost province enjoys advantages in agriculture, forestry and aquaculture, which enable it to offer various products and services designated as OCOP. They include food, beverages, handicrafts, and rural tourism services. The province recognised 44 more OCOP products last year, taking its total to 77 ranking from three or four star level under a five-star system. The ones recognised last year include Ngọc Trân and Mạch Long fish sauce, Từ Tâm biological rice, Minh Duy fermented bulrush, Minh Quân dried soft banana, Ba Đức dried gourami fish, Năm Căn shrimp cracker, and Ngọc Hiển mangrove chopsticks. With the onset of the rainy season in the delta, the country’s largest rice, fruit and seafood producer, the saltwater intrusion has been declined significantly, local reports say. The delta normally faces saltwater intrusion in the dry season which lasts from December to April, severely impacting agricultural production and the lives of locals. To cope with saltwater intrusion in the just concluded dry season, farmers implemented various prevention measures as advised by local authorities, including building temporary saltwater prevention dams and storing fresh water.
