VietNamNet Bridge – Biologists, rangers and researchers are all working together on a reintroduction programme for Hatinh langurs run by the Endangered Primates Rescue Centre (EPRC) in Ninh Binh Province. The langurs, who have been bred in captivity, are gently released into the wild, with rangers tracking them daily to see how they integrate into the wild for the first time in their lives. Hoai Nam reports. Biological researcher Tran Ngoc Toan woke up when a signal rang out from his Global Positioning System (GPS). It was around 9am, a day after three Hatinh langurs (stripe-headed black langurs, found in the central province of Ha Tinh, scientifically called Trachypithecus hatinhensis) were released into the Ke Go Nature Reserve in the central province of Ha Tinh. The release was part of a reintroduction programme for Hatinh langurs run by the Endangered Primates Rescue Centre (EPRC) in Ninh Binh. Rescued pangolins being released into Vietnam national park
Conservationists have released a Sunda pangolin into Cat Tien National Park and for the first time, will monitor it to make sure it acclimates properly. Five more Sunda pangolins rescued from smuggling rings will be released into the park located 150 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City - after the scaly mammals responded well to a rehabilitation program conducted by the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program (CPCP), a program run by Cuc Phuong National Park in northern Vietnam. The animals had been seized from smugglers on different occasions. This is the first time in Vietnam that a project will monitor the survival and movements of a pangolin released into the wild and it is hoped the process will make way for future release programs which aim to bolster the depleted Sunda pangolin population, CPCP said in a press release on May 3. Rehabilitating pangolins seized from smugglers is a notoriously difficult process, but it made possible in this instance thanks to husbandry guidelines … [Read more...]
Tiger rescued from captivity and sent to wildlife center
Authorities at a national park in the north-central Vietnamese province of Nghe An Tuesday handed over a tiger rescued from captivity to a wildlife rescue center in Hanoi, newswire Dan Tri reported. The Pu Mat National Park said the 170-kilogram male cat is in good health after five months of treatment at the park following his rescue from the house of a local. But with the animal losing its wild instincts after being kept in captivity since a very young age, park authorities said they could not release it into the wild. They handed it over to the Soc Son Wildlife Rescue Center in Soc Son, a suburban district of Hanoi. There the tiger will mate with others for breeding. Police in Nghe An's Yen Thanh District seized the animal from the house of Le Van Dat on January 1. Dat confessed he had bought it as a cub weighing 1.6 kilograms for VND960,000 (US$45) in Laos. He had intended to cook its bones and make traditional medicine. Late last year the Nghe An police tracked down … [Read more...]

A panda climbs a tree in its new enclosure at the Chengdu Giant Panda Field Research Centre. Previous attempts by Chinese authorities to release pandas into the wild have proved unsuccessful. The last bear that was set free in 2006 was found dead after 10 months, apparently killed by wild pandas. This time round, scientists are releasing the six pandas in stages in a bid to increase their chances of survival, as they try and bring the number of endangered bears in the wild up from the current 1,590.
