Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked ministries and People’s Committees of centrally-run cities and provinces to step up the implementation of programmes and tasks on air quality control. The move aims to intensify the control of air pollution, ease its impact on people’s health and spur socio-economic development. In a recently-issued directive, the Government leader emphasised the need to review law enforcement and the control of dust and emissions at industrial facilities as well as from transport and construction activities. He also ordered the suspension of the facilities that cause serious environmental pollution. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has demanded subordinate levels strengthen air pollution control as air quality in many localities, particularly Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City has worsened. Particularly, the Government chief tasked ministries and localities to immediately review and evaluate the implementation of regulations on dust and emission control right in the first half of 2021. He asked for promptly enhancing air quality monitoring capacity to ensure that air will be monitored nationwide by 2025. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment was tasked to review and report to the Prime Minister a roadmap for application of national emission standards for road motor vehicles in the fourth quarter this year. The department’s Environmental Protection Board said that the content of high fine particulate matters of PM 2.5 and PM 10 increased by 1.3-2 times against the day before. Weather conditions with the thick dense smog and high moisture is among the major causes of the serious pollution in the city, the board added. In addition, exhaust fumes from vehicles, industrial production activities and dust from on-going construction sites also contribute to the problem.
